About the turkey calculator
Type how many people are coming. The calculator tells you how big a turkey to buy, how many days to thaw it in the fridge, how long to thaw it in cold water, and how long to roast it at 325 °F (163 °C).
The roasting times come from the USDA chart for a whole turkey. A table shows the times for every size, stuffed and not stuffed. US Thanksgiving 2026 is on Thursday, 26 November — so start planning early.

Frequently asked questions
How much turkey do I need per person?
About 1 lb per person of whole turkey with bones. Take 1.5 lb per person if you want leftovers. Children eat less.
How long do I cook a turkey?
At 325 °F (163 °C), a 12 lb turkey takes about 2 h 45 min – 3 h, and a 20 lb turkey about 4 h 15 min – 4 h 30 min (not stuffed). Use the table above, and check with a meat thermometer.
How long does it take to thaw a turkey?
In the fridge, about 1 day for every 4 lb — so 5 days for a 20 lb turkey. In cold water, about 30 minutes per lb. Change the water every 30 minutes.
How do I know the turkey is done?
Put a meat thermometer in the thickest part of the thigh. The turkey is done at 165 °F (74 °C). If it is stuffed, the middle of the stuffing must reach 165 °F too.
What if I have more than 20 guests?
For more than 24 lb (11 kg), think about two smaller turkeys. They cook more evenly and fit in the oven better.
Is the time exact?
No. Ovens and turkeys vary. The times are a guide. Always check the temperature with a meat thermometer.
