About the recipe scaler
Cooking for six from a recipe for four? Halving a cake for two? Paste the ingredient list, type how many the recipe serves and how many you want to serve, and every amount is recalculated at once.
The scaler shows amounts the way you measure them: kitchen fractions for cups and spoons (1⅓ cups, not 1.333), and clean numbers for grams and millilitres. It works with recipes in any language — it looks for the amounts on each line, so "2 cups flour", "Mehl 200 g" and "砂糖 大さじ2" all scale correctly.
How to use it
- Paste the ingredients, one per line
- Type how many the recipe serves and how many you want to serve
- Or press × ½, × 2 or × 3 for a quick change
- Read the new amounts — scaled numbers are highlighted
- Press Copy to paste the new list into your notes
Measuring cheat sheet
| Measure | Equals |
|---|---|
| 1 cup | 16 tablespoons = 48 teaspoons = about 240 ml |
| ½ cup | 8 tablespoons |
| ⅓ cup | 5 tablespoons + 1 teaspoon |
| ¼ cup | 4 tablespoons |
| 1 tablespoon | 3 teaspoons = about 15 ml |
| 1 teaspoon | about 5 ml |
| 1 stick of butter | ½ cup = 8 tablespoons = 113 g |
Halving ¾ cup? That is ⅜ cup — measure it as ¼ cup + 2 tablespoons.
Tips for scaling recipes
- Eggs: for half an egg, beat one egg and use half of it (about 2 tablespoons).
- Salt and strong spices: when you double or triple, add a little less than the full amount, then taste.
- Baking times change: a bigger batch in a bigger pan needs longer; a deeper pan needs a lower heat for longer. Check early.
- Pan size matters: to bake a scaled cake, use the Baking Pan Converter to pick the right pan.
- Weigh when you can: grams scale perfectly; cups of flour can vary by 20%.
Frequently asked questions
How do I double a recipe?
Multiply every ingredient by 2: press × 2. Most recipes double well; for cakes, use two pans or a pan with twice the area rather than a deeper one.
How do I halve a recipe?
Press × ½. The tricky amounts become kitchen fractions: ⅓ cup becomes ⅙ cup (2 tablespoons + 2 teaspoons), and ¾ cup becomes ⅜ cup (¼ cup + 2 tablespoons).
Can I scale by a number like 1.5?
Yes. Type any servings — 4 → 6 is ×1½ — or use the × 1½ button.
Does it work with recipes in other languages?
Yes. The scaler does not need to understand the words — it finds the numbers on each line. Lines ending with ":" (like "For the sauce:") are kept as headings.
Which numbers are not scaled?
Oven temperatures, cooking times, percentages and pan sizes (numbers followed by °, min, %, cm or inches) stay the same. In "2 x 400 g cans", only the 2 is scaled.
