Steps
About the fraction calculator
Fractions are where many people get stuck in math — at school, while helping with homework, or when a recipe or a measurement needs to be halved. This calculator does the work exactly and shows every step, so you can check homework or learn the method, not just see the answer.
It handles proper fractions (3/4), improper fractions (7/4) and mixed numbers (1 3/4), and gives each answer as a simplified fraction, a mixed number and a decimal.
How to use it
- Choose Calculate, Simplify or Decimal to fraction
- For Calculate: type the two fractions — the whole number box is for mixed numbers and can stay empty
- Pick the operation: +, −, × or ÷
- The answer and the steps update as you type
Adding and subtracting fractions
Fractions can only be added when the bottom numbers (denominators) are the same:
- Find the least common denominator — the smallest number both denominators divide into
- Rewrite each fraction with that denominator
- Add or subtract the top numbers and keep the bottom
- Simplify the answer
Example: 1/2 + 3/4 → 2/4 + 3/4 = 5/4 = 1 1/4
Multiplying and dividing fractions
- Multiply: top × top and bottom × bottom. 2/3 × 3/4 = 6/12 = 1/2
- Divide: flip the second fraction and multiply. 1/2 ÷ 3/4 = 1/2 × 4/3 = 4/6 = 2/3
Mixed numbers are first turned into improper fractions: 1 1/2 = (1 × 2 + 1)/2 = 3/2.
Simplifying fractions
A fraction is in its simplest form when the top and the bottom have no common factor except 1. Divide both by their greatest common factor: 18/24 → both divide by 6 → 3/4.
Decimals to fractions
Write the decimal over 10, 100, 1000… (one zero per decimal place), then simplify: 0.625 = 625/1000 = 5/8.
Frequently asked questions
How do I add fractions with different denominators?
Find the least common denominator, rewrite both fractions with it, add the top numbers and keep the bottom, then simplify. The calculator shows each of these steps for your numbers.
How do I enter a mixed number?
Type the whole number in the first box and the fraction in the boxes next to it. For 2 3/4, type 2, then 3 on top and 4 below.
Does the calculator simplify the answer?
Yes. Every answer is reduced to its simplest form, and also shown as a mixed number and a decimal.
How do I turn a decimal into a fraction?
Choose Decimal to fraction and type the decimal, for example 0.75. The calculator writes it over 100 and simplifies it to 3/4, with the steps.
Can I use negative fractions?
Yes. Put a minus sign in front of the whole number or the top number, for example −1 1/2 or −3/4.
Good to know
- All answers are exact — 1/3 stays 1/3, not 0.333
- Decimals are shown to up to 8 places
- Repeating decimals (0.333…) are typed as the digits you have; 0.333 becomes 333/1000
- Everything runs in your browser
