Type each score as 88, 88% or 44/50, and its weight in %. Leave the weights empty to average them equally.
About the grade calculator
Most classes do not count every test the same. Homework might be 20% of the grade, quizzes 30% and exams 50%. That makes it hard to know where you stand — and what you need on the final.
This calculator answers both questions:
- My current grade — your weighted average so far, from each score and its weight
- What I need on the final — the exact score you need on the final exam to finish with the grade you want
Both show the letter grade too.
How to use it
- Choose My current grade or What I need on the final
- For your current grade: type each score (88, 88% or 44/50) and its weight in %
- Add as many rows as you need with Add row
- For the final: type your current grade, the grade you want and how much the final exam counts
- The answer updates as you type
How a weighted grade works
Each score is multiplied by its weight, the results are added up, and the total is divided by the sum of the weights:
Grade = (score₁ × weight₁ + score₂ × weight₂ + …) ÷ (weight₁ + weight₂ + …)
Example: homework 92 (20%), quizzes 85 (30%), midterm 78 (50%) → (92×20 + 85×30 + 78×50) ÷ 100 = 82.9%, a B−.
The weights do not have to add up to 100. If only part of the course is graded so far — say 70% — your grade is worked out from that 70%.
How the final exam score is worked out
If the final counts for w% of your grade:
Needed on final = (wanted grade − current grade × (1 − w)) ÷ w
Example: you have 84%, you want 90%, and the final is worth 30% → (90 − 84 × 0.7) ÷ 0.3 = 104%. That target is out of reach without extra credit — but 87% overall needs only 94% on the final.
Letter grades
The calculator uses the common US scale:
- A+ 97+, A 93–96, A− 90–92
- B+ 87–89, B 83–86, B− 80–82
- C+ 77–79, C 73–76, C− 70–72
- D+ 67–69, D 63–66, D− 60–62
- F below 60
Your school may use a different scale — check your syllabus.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my grade with weights?
Multiply each score by its weight, add the results, and divide by the total of the weights. Type your scores and weights into the calculator and it does this for you, as you type.
What do I need on my final to get an A?
Choose What I need on the final, type your current grade, 90 as the grade you want, and the final exam weight. The calculator shows the score you need.
Can I type scores as points, like 44/50?
Yes. Type 44/50 and it is counted as 88%. You can also type 88 or 88%.
What if I don't know the weights?
Leave the weight boxes empty. Every score then counts the same, which gives a plain average.
Is my data saved or sent anywhere?
No. Everything is calculated in your browser, and nothing is stored or sent.
Good to know
- Scores above 100% (extra credit) are allowed
- Rows without a score are ignored
- When some rows have weights and some do not, the rows without a weight are left out — the calculator tells you
