About the Arabic keyboard

Arabic is written right to left with 28 letters that change shape depending on where they are in a word. Your browser joins the letters correctly — you only need a way to type them.

Click the letters on screen, or type on your normal keyboard: each key gives the Arabic letter in the same place on a standard Arabic keyboard. The text box writes right to left, and the vowel marks (harakat) are on the Shift keys.

How to use it

  • Click the letters on the on-screen keyboard, or type on your own keyboard — Q gives ض, W gives ص, E gives ث… No need to click the text box first, and the matching on-screen key lights up
  • The text flows right to left, as Arabic should
  • Hold Shift for the vowel marks: fatha ( َ ), damma ( ُ ), kasra ( ِ ), tanwin and sukun ( ْ ), and for أ إ آ
  • The B key gives لا (lam-alif), the key left of 1 gives ذ
  • Click Copy and paste the text anywhere, or Search Google / Translate straight away

Where the letters are

  • Top row: ض ص ث ق ف غ ع ه خ ح ج د
  • Middle row: ش س ي ب ل ا ت ن م ك ط
  • Bottom row: ئ ء ؤ ر لا ى ة و ز ظ

This is the standard Arabic (101) layout. Each key also shows the English letter in the same place, so you can learn the layout as you type.

Vowel marks (harakat)

Everyday Arabic is written without short vowels. For the Quran, poetry, children's books or learning, add them after the letter with Shift: Shift + Q fatha, Shift + E damma, Shift + A kasra, Shift + X sukun, Shift + W / R / S the tanwin, and Shift + ` shadda.
