About the Russian keyboard

Russian is written in the Cyrillic alphabet: 33 letters, some that look like English letters but sound different (Р is "r", Н is "n", С is "s"). Typing them needs a Russian keyboard — or this page.

Click the letters on screen, or type on your normal keyboard: each key gives the Russian letter that sits in the same place on a Russian keyboard (the standard ЙЦУКЕН layout). Capital letters, ё and the hard and soft signs are all there.

How to use it

  • Click the letters on the on-screen keyboard, or type on your own keyboard — Q gives Й, W gives Ц, E gives У… No need to click the text box first, and the matching on-screen key lights up
  • Hold Shift (or use Caps Lock) for capital letters
  • The key left of 1 gives ё; the keys right of P give х and ъ
  • Click Copy and paste the text anywhere, or Search Google / Translate straight away

Where the letters are

The Russian layout is called ЙЦУКЕН, after the first letters of the top row:

  • Top row: Й Ц У К Е Н Г Ш Щ З Х Ъ
  • Middle row: Ф Ы В А П Р О Л Д Ж Э
  • Bottom row: Я Ч С М И Т Ь Б Ю

Each key also shows the English letter in the same place, so you can learn the layout as you type.

Letters that fool English readers

  • В is "v", Н is "n", Р is "r", С is "s", У is "u", Х is "kh"
  • Ы is a sound between "i" and "u"; Ь (soft sign) and Ъ (hard sign) have no sound of their own

Private and free

Everything happens in your browser: nothing you type is uploaded. Your text is kept on this device only, so it is still there when you come back. No sign-up, no install.
