About the average calculator

An average is one number that sums up a whole list. There is more than one kind, and each tells you something different:

  • Mean — add all the numbers, then divide by how many there are
  • Median — sort the numbers and take the one in the middle
  • Mode — the number that comes up most often
  • Range — the highest number minus the lowest

This calculator works out all of them at the same time. It also shows the sum, the count, the lowest and highest value and the geometric mean (when every number is above zero). Below the result you see your numbers sorted, so you can check them.

Features

  • Seven results at once — mean, median, mode, range, lowest and highest, sum and count
  • Geometric mean — shown too when every number is above zero
  • Paste any list — commas, spaces, semicolons or new lines all work, even a column from a spreadsheet
  • More than one mode — if numbers tie for the top count, you see all of them
  • Sorted list — your numbers in order under the result, so you can check them
  • Live update — the result changes while you type
  • Copy — copy the result with one click
  • Private — it works in your browser, nothing is uploaded, and your numbers are saved on this device

How to use it

  • Type or paste your numbers in the box Your numbers — any separator, or one per line
  • Use commas, spaces, semicolons or new lines between them — all work
  • You can paste a column straight from a spreadsheet
  • The result updates while you type
  • Press Copy to copy the result, or Start again to clear it

Example

The tool opens with these numbers: 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42, 8.

Sorted, the list is 4, 8, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42.

Mean or median?

The mean uses every number, so one very big or very small value can pull it a long way. The median does not move much.

NumbersMeanMedian
85, 90, 78, 92, 8886.688
1, 2, 3, 4, 100223

In the second row, 100 pulls the mean up to 22, but most numbers are small. Here the median (3) tells the story better. This is why house prices and salaries are often given as a median.

Even number of values

With an even count there are two middle numbers. The median is the mean of those two. For 3, 7, 7, 2, 9, 10 the sorted list is 2, 3, 7, 7, 9, 10, so the median is (7 + 7) ÷ 2 = 7. The mean is 38 ÷ 6 = 6.3333.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find the average of numbers?

Add them all up and divide by how many numbers there are. For 4, 8 and 15 that is 27 ÷ 3 = 9.

What is the difference between mean, median and mode?

The mean is the sum divided by the count. The median is the middle value when the numbers are sorted. The mode is the value that appears most often.

What if no number repeats?

Then there is no mode, and the tool shows none. If two or more numbers share the top count, it shows all of them.

Can I use negative numbers and decimals?

Yes. Type them as usual, like -3 or 2.75. The geometric mean is only shown when every number is above zero.

What is the geometric mean for?

It is used for growth rates and ratios, like the average yearly return of an investment. It is always lower than or equal to the mean.

How many numbers can I enter?

Up to 5,000 numbers at once.
