About the steps to miles calculator

Your phone or watch counts steps. This calculator turns them into distance. It estimates your step length from your height and your sex, then multiplies it by the number of steps.

You get the distance in miles and km, the step length used, the time at a normal pace, and the number of steps in a mile. Add your weight under More options to see the calories too. A table shows the distance for 1,000 to 20,000 steps.

Example

The tool opens with 10,000 steps, walking, a woman who is 5 ft 7 in tall.

  • Step length: 0.413 × height = 70 cm (27.7 in)
  • Distance: 10,000 × 27.7 in = 4.37 miles (7.03 km)
  • Steps in a mile: 2,290
  • Time at a normal pace (100 steps a minute): 100 minutes
  • If she weighs 160 lb, she burns about 255 kcal

When she runs, her step is longer (0.65 × height = 43.6 in). Then 10,000 steps are 6.87 miles, and a mile is about 1,455 steps.

The formulas

  • Walking step length = height × 0.413 (women) or × 0.415 (men)
  • Running step length = height × 0.65
  • Distance = steps × step length
  • Time = steps ÷ 100 a minute (walking) or ÷ 160 a minute (running)
  • Calories ≈ km × weight in kg × 0.5 (walking) or × 1.0 (running)

Frequently asked questions

How many steps are in a mile?

For most adults, about 2,000 to 2,500 walking steps. Taller people need fewer steps. Running steps are longer, so a mile takes fewer.

How many miles is 10,000 steps?

About 4 to 5 miles for most adults. For a woman of 5 ft 7 in, it is about 4.37 miles.

How can I measure my own step length?

Walk 10 normal steps, measure the distance, and divide by 10. Type the number in My step length (if I know it). Then the tool uses it instead of your height.

How long does it take to walk 10,000 steps?

At a normal pace of about 100 steps a minute, about 100 minutes. You can spread it over the whole day.

Is the calorie number exact?

No. It is a rough estimate. Speed, hills and your body all change it. The Calories Burned Calculator can help for a single walk or run.

Is this medical advice?

No. It is a general guide. Ask a doctor before you start a new exercise plan.

Good to know

  • Your numbers are saved only in this browser
  • Nothing you type is sent anywhere
  • The step length from height is an average; your own step can be longer or shorter
  • Phone step counts are not perfect, so the distance is an estimate too
