About the ideal weight calculator
There is no single "perfect" weight, but doctors have used ideal body weight formulas for more than 50 years. They depend on your height and your sex. This calculator uses four of them and shows you the average, together with the healthy range based on your BMI.
Type your sex and height. In the result you see:
- An ideal weight — the average of the four formulas
- The healthy range for your height (BMI 18.5 to 24.9)
- The result of each formula: Devine, Robinson, Miller and Hamwi
How to use it
- Choose kg, cm or lb, ft, in
- Choose your sex
- Type your height — centimetres, or feet and inches
- Read the ideal weight and the healthy range
The four formulas
They all start at a weight for 5 feet (152 cm) and add a number for each inch above it:
| Formula | Men | Women |
|---|---|---|
| Devine (1974) | 50 kg + 2.3 kg per inch | 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg per inch |
| Robinson (1983) | 52 kg + 1.9 kg per inch | 49 kg + 1.7 kg per inch |
| Miller (1983) | 56.2 kg + 1.41 kg per inch | 53.1 kg + 1.36 kg per inch |
| Hamwi (1964) | 48 kg + 2.7 kg per inch | 45.4 kg + 2.2 kg per inch |
The Devine formula was first made to work out drug doses. They give slightly different answers, so the calculator shows all four and the average.
Ideal weight by height
The average of the four formulas:
| Height | Women | Men |
|---|---|---|
| 5 ft 0 in (152 cm) | 48 kg (106 lb) | 52 kg (114 lb) |
| 5 ft 2 in (157 cm) | 52 kg (115 lb) | 56 kg (123 lb) |
| 5 ft 4 in (163 cm) | 56 kg (123 lb) | 60 kg (132 lb) |
| 5 ft 6 in (168 cm) | 60 kg (131 lb) | 64 kg (141 lb) |
| 5 ft 8 in (173 cm) | 63 kg (140 lb) | 68 kg (150 lb) |
| 5 ft 10 in (178 cm) | 67 kg (148 lb) | 72 kg (159 lb) |
| 6 ft 0 in (183 cm) | 71 kg (156 lb) | 77 kg (169 lb) |
| 6 ft 2 in (188 cm) | 75 kg (165 lb) | 81 kg (178 lb) |
The healthy BMI range
BMI is your weight in kg divided by your height in metres, squared. A BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 is the healthy range. For a woman who is 5 ft 5 in (165 cm) that is 50 to 68 kg (111 to 150 lb), and her ideal weight by the four formulas is about 58 kg (127 lb).
What the numbers do not tell you
- Muscle weighs more than fat — an athlete can be heavy and healthy
- Age, frame size and where you carry fat matter
- A healthy weight is about how you feel, your blood tests and your fitness, not just one number

Frequently asked questions
What is my ideal weight?
It depends on your height and sex. Type them in and use the healthy range as your main guide; the ideal weight is the middle of the formulas.
Which formula is the best?
None is perfect. They differ by a few kilograms. That is why the calculator shows the average and the range.
Does it work for children?
No. For children, use growth charts from a doctor.
What if I am under 5 feet?
The formulas were made for people above 5 ft (152 cm). The calculator tells you, and the healthy BMI range is the better guide.
Is a lower weight always better?
No. Being under the healthy range is also not good for your health.
Is this medical advice?
No. It is a general guide. Ask a doctor about your own weight and health.
