About Brown Noise

This page plays brown noise: a deep, soft rumble, like a distant waterfall or strong wind outside. Press Play and it runs until you stop it — for a nap, a work session or a whole night.

Brown noise has most of its energy in the low notes. That makes it softer than white noise, which many people find sharp or tiring after a while. It still covers the sounds around you: traffic, voices through a wall, a TV in the next room.

The sound is made live in your browser. Nothing is downloaded, so it starts at once, and it never loops — there is no join every few minutes to notice and get annoyed by.

Features

  • Brown noise first — the page opens on brown noise, ready to play
  • Five other sounds — white noise, pink noise, rain, ocean waves and a fan, one tap away
  • Sleep timer — stop after 15, 30, 60 or 120 minutes, 3 hours or 8 hours
  • No loop — the sound is made as you listen, so it never repeats
  • Soft fade — the sound fades in and out, so nothing wakes or startles you
  • Remembers your settings — your sound and volume are saved in this browser
  • Free and private — no sign-up, no download, no ads in the sound

Brown, white and pink noise compared

All three are "noise": a steady sound with no tune and no words. The colour says how the energy is spread from low notes to high notes.

In numbers: white noise has the same energy in every frequency. Pink noise drops by about 3 decibels each octave. Brown noise drops by about 6 decibels each octave, twice as fast. Going from white to pink to brown is like turning the treble down.

There is no "best" colour. Try brown first, then pink, and keep the one that you stop noticing.

Brown noise for sleep, focus and babies

For sleep. A steady sound makes sudden noises — a door, a car, a partner who snores — less likely to wake you, because they stand out less. Brown noise is popular for sleep because it has no hiss. Set Stop after to 8 hours for the whole night, or to 30 or 60 minutes if you only want help falling asleep.

For focus and study. Many people find that a steady sound helps them stay on one task, because it covers small noises that pull their attention away. Brown noise is a common choice for long sessions of reading, writing or coding. Many people with ADHD say that brown noise helps them settle into work. The research on this is small and the results are mixed, so treat it as something to try, not as a treatment. If it helps you, use it.

For babies. Many parents play a steady sound at nap time and at night. Keep the volume low — about as loud as a quiet shower — and put the phone or speaker away from the crib, not next to the baby's head. Ask your doctor if you are not sure.

Listening for hours: good to know

  • Keep this tab open. You can switch to another tab or app, but closing the page stops the sound.
  • Phones and screen lock. Some phones pause web audio when the screen locks. If the sound stops, keep the screen on and turn the brightness down, or plug the phone in.
  • Keep it quiet. You will listen for a long time, so use the lowest volume that still covers the noise. If you can hear a voice but cannot follow the words, the volume is right.
  • Headphones or a speaker. For sleep, a small speaker or the phone on the night table is often more comfortable than headphones.
  • Nothing is recorded and nothing is sent anywhere. The sound is made on your device.

How to use it

  • Brown noise is already picked — press Play
  • Move the Volume slider until outside noises stop pulling your attention
  • Set Stop after if you want it to end by itself — 8 hours covers a whole night
  • Tap another sound (pink noise, rain, fan…) any time to switch
  • Press Stop when you are done

Frequently asked questions

What is brown noise?

Brown noise is a steady sound with most of its energy in the low frequencies. It sounds like a deep rumble, a distant waterfall or strong wind. It is named after Robert Brown and the random "Brownian" motion, not after the colour.

Is brown noise good for sleep?

Many people find it helps. A steady sound makes sudden noises stand out less, so they are less likely to wake you. Brown noise is softer than white noise, so many people find it easier to sleep with. Keep the volume low.

Does brown noise help with ADHD?

Many people with ADHD say brown noise helps them focus. The research is still small and mixed, so it is not a treatment. It is free to try: play it while you work and see if it helps you.

Brown noise or white noise — which is better?

White noise is brighter and covers voices best. Brown noise is deeper and softer, and many people find it less tiring for hours. Try both on this page — one tap switches between them.

Can I play brown noise all night?

Yes. Set Stop after to 8 hours, or to Never. Keep this tab open. On some phones the sound stops when the screen locks; keep the screen on or plug the phone in.

Is it safe for babies?

Many parents use a steady sound for sleep. Keep the volume low and the speaker away from the crib. If you have questions about your baby's sleep, ask your doctor.

Is it free? Does it need the internet?

It is free, with no sign-up. The page needs the internet to open, but the sound itself is made on your device, so nothing streams while it plays.
