About the Venn diagram maker

A Venn diagram shows what two or three groups have in common. Each group is a circle; where the circles overlap are the things they share. It is the classic way to compare and contrast — in school, in a report or on a slide.

With most tools you have to drag text into the right spot yourself. Here you simply list what belongs to each group, and the tool works out the overlaps: anything that appears in two lists goes into their overlap, and anything in all three goes in the middle. Pick one of ten styles, add a colour legend, and show it fullscreen in class.

How to use it

  • Give each group a name, like Cats and Dogs
  • List what belongs to each group, one item per line
  • Write a shared item in both lists — "Furry" in Cats and in Dogs — and it moves into the overlap
  • It starts with three groups — click × on a group to delete it for a two-circle diagram, or Add a group to bring the third back
  • Pick a style, then choose what to show inside the circles, the colours and the size
  • Click Download PNG or Download SVG — or Fullscreen to show it on a projector or a whiteboard

Ten styles

  • Classic — see-through colour circles; clear and simple
  • Pastel — soft colours with no outlines, for slides and posters
  • Outline — thick coloured rings, no fill; easy to print
  • Bold — strong colours with white edges, for a presentation that has to stand out
  • Minimal — thin grey circles and plain text
  • Dark — glowing circles on navy, for dark slides and screens
  • Chalkboard — dashed chalk circles on a green board, for the classroom
  • Watercolor — soft painted circles with uneven edges, like a hand-made poster
  • Notebook — lined paper and a handwritten look, great for homework
  • Playful — bright, round and friendly, for younger students

The style only changes the look; your groups and items stay the same.

Advanced options

Open Advanced options for three more settings:

  • Your own background colour — any colour you like, for example your school or company colour. The text turns dark or light by itself so it stays easy to read
  • Show the group names — turn off the names next to the circles for a cleaner picture
  • Colour legend — a small box in a corner with a coloured dot and the name of each group. Handy with the names turned off, or when the diagram goes into a report

Two or three circles

  • Two groups — the classic double Venn diagram: what only A has, what only B has, and what both share
  • Three groups — the triple Venn diagram with seven parts: each group alone, each pair, and all three in the middle

Items are matched without caring about capital letters or extra spaces, so "Four legs" and "four legs" count as the same.

Ideas

  • School — compare two animals, two countries, two characters in a book, or two historical periods
  • Work — compare products, tools or job candidates; show where skills overlap in a team
  • Research — show how many items two lists share, with Only counts
  • Planning — "what we want", "what we can afford", "what we have time for": the middle is the plan

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a Venn diagram?

Type a name and a list of items for each group. Write shared items in both lists; the tool places them in the overlap. Then download your diagram as PNG or SVG.

Can I make a Venn diagram with three circles?

Yes — it starts with three. A three-circle diagram has seven areas: each group alone, each pair, and all three in the middle. Delete a group with × for two circles, or bring it back with "Add a group".

Can I show numbers instead of words?

Yes. Choose "Only counts" to show how many items are in each part, or "Items and counts" for both.

What if there are too many items?

The text gets smaller to fit. When even small text cannot fit, the area shows the first items and "+ N more". A larger image size gives more room.

Can I change the style and colours?

Yes. Pick one of ten styles, from Classic and Pastel to Chalkboard, Watercolor and Notebook, and one of five colour sets. Under Advanced options you can also choose your own background colour.

Can I add a legend?

Yes. Open Advanced options and choose a corner for the colour legend. It shows a coloured dot and the name of each group. You can also hide the group names next to the circles.

Can I show the Venn diagram in class?

Yes. Click Fullscreen and the diagram fills the whole screen, ready for a projector or a smart board. Press Esc or × to go back.

Is my list uploaded?

No. The diagram is drawn in your browser, on your own device.

Good to know

  • The circles are always the same size — the size does not show how many items a group has
  • Download the SVG file to change colours or text later in Illustrator, Inkscape or Figma
  • For a printable worksheet, download the PNG and print it, or leave the items empty for students to fill in
