About the VAT calculator
VAT (value added tax) is the tax that is added to the price of most goods and services in the UK, the EU and many other countries. Shops usually show prices with VAT. Businesses often work with prices without VAT.
This calculator goes both ways. Choose Add VAT to turn a net price into a gross price. Choose Remove VAT to find the net price and the VAT inside a price you already paid.
Pick your Country and the Tax rate box fills in by itself. You can also type any rate, for example a reduced rate for food or books. The result updates as you type, and a small table shows the same rate on other amounts.

How to add VAT
Multiply the net price by 1 + rate. At 20%, that is × 1.2.
When you open the page, the tool shows 100 at 20% (the UK standard rate):
- VAT: 100 × 0.20 = 20
- Price with VAT: 100 × 1.20 = 120
| Price without VAT | VAT at 20% | Price with VAT |
|---|---|---|
| 10 | 2 | 12 |
| 50 | 10 | 60 |
| 100 | 20 | 120 |
| 500 | 100 | 600 |
| 1,000 | 200 | 1,200 |
| 5,000 | 1,000 | 6,000 |
How to remove VAT
Do not take 20% off the gross price — that gives the wrong answer. Divide by 1 + rate instead.
- 120 ÷ 1.20 = 100 without VAT, so the VAT was 20
- 100 ÷ 1.20 = 83.33 without VAT, so the VAT was 16.67
At 20%, the VAT inside a gross price is always 1/6 of it. Choose Remove VAT and the tool does this for you.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate VAT?
Multiply the price without VAT by the rate. At 20%, VAT on 250 is 250 × 0.20 = 50, and the price with VAT is 300.
How do I take VAT off a price?
Divide the price by 1 + the rate. For 20% VAT, divide by 1.2: 300 ÷ 1.2 = 250. The VAT is 300 − 250 = 50.
Why is removing 20% not the same as removing VAT?
Because VAT is added on the net price, not on the gross price. 20% of 120 is 24, but the VAT in 120 is only 20. Use Remove VAT to get it right.
Can I use a reduced rate?
Yes. Type any rate in the Tax rate box. The country list shows only the standard rate.
Is this tax advice?
No. It is a calculator. The rate for your product, and the rules for your business, come from your tax office.
