What Lorem Ipsum actually is
It is scrambled Latin, and it is older than the web by about five hundred years.
The text comes from Cicero, specifically *De finibus bonorum et malorum* — "On the Ends of Good and Evil" — written in 45 BC. The familiar opening is a corruption of a line in section 1.10.32: *"Neque porro quisquam est qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet…"*, which means roughly "nor is there anyone who loves pain itself because it is pain".
The famous first two words are a broken fragment. The original phrase is dolorem ipsum — the beginning has been cut off, which is why "Lorem" is not a Latin word at all.
Nobody is certain who did the cutting. The most credible account is that an unknown typesetter in the 1500s scrambled a galley of Cicero to make a specimen sheet showing off typefaces. It reappeared in the 1960s on Letraset dry-transfer sheets, then in Aldus PageMaker in the 1980s, and from there into every design program since.
Why designers use nonsense on purpose
This is the part people find strange until they have watched it happen once.
If you fill a mockup with real, readable text, everyone in the room reads it. The meeting about the layout becomes a meeting about the wording. Someone questions a claim in the third paragraph; someone else fixes a typo. Nobody looks at the spacing, which is what you brought them there for.
Lorem ipsum removes that distraction. The eye sees texture, weight and rhythm rather than meaning, so attention stays on the design. Typographers call this greeking.
It also stops something worse: real-looking placeholder text escaping into production. "John Smith, CEO" and a fake phone number look plausible enough to survive review and ship to a live site. Lorem ipsum never does, because it is visibly wrong.
And it has the right *shape*. Word lengths and sentence rhythm are close enough to English that a block of it takes up believable space. Repeating "test test test" does not — it produces an unnaturally even block that hides the line-breaking problems you are trying to find.

Good to know
- It is not real Latin. It is Latin words in scrambled order; it does not translate to anything.
- Take it out before you launch. Published lorem ipsum is an embarrassingly common mistake — it has reached printed newspapers, shipped apps and live product pages.
- Search your project for "lorem" before release. Ten seconds now saves a bad afternoon later.
- Design for the real length. If your headlines will be 60 characters, do not test with 20 — placeholder text should match the size of what will replace it.
- It is Latin-script only. For an Arabic, Thai, Japanese or Korean layout, lorem ipsum tests nothing useful; those scripts have completely different line heights and breaking rules.
- Screen readers will read it aloud. Leaving it in an accessibility test gives a misleading result.

Common questions
What does Lorem Ipsum mean?
Nothing, as written. It is real Latin vocabulary shuffled into a meaningless order. The source is Cicero's *De finibus bonorum et malorum* from 45 BC, and the original passage is about pain and pleasure — but the scrambling destroyed the sense, and "Lorem" is not even a complete word. It is the tail of *dolorem* with the front cut off.
Why not just use real text?
Because people read real text. Show a client a layout with readable copy and the conversation turns to the wording instead of the design. Placeholder text keeps attention on spacing, hierarchy and type. It also cannot be mistaken for finished content, so it never quietly ships to a live site the way plausible fake text does.
How much placeholder text do I need?
Match what will actually go there. If the finished paragraph will run 50 words, generate 50 — a 200-word block will make the layout look fine and then break when the real copy arrives. It is worth generating both a short and a long version to see how the design handles each.
Is it bad for SEO if lorem ipsum reaches my live site?
It is bad, though not because of a penalty. A page of meaningless Latin gives search engines nothing to rank and gives visitors nothing to read, so the page simply fails at its job. The larger cost is credibility — a visitor who sees Latin where a product description should be assumes the site is abandoned.
Are there alternatives to Lorem Ipsum?
Plenty, and some are genuinely more useful. Themed generators produce placeholder text in a particular voice, which can help a client picture the finished tone. For anything outside the Latin alphabet you need script-appropriate filler, because Latin text tells you nothing about how Arabic or Japanese will set. Some designers argue for drafting real copy early instead — a good idea when the schedule allows it.
Does this generator send my text anywhere?
There is nothing to send. The text is produced by your own browser from a built-in word list, so no request is made at all. You can disconnect from the internet and it still works.
