About the family tree maker
A family tree shows how a family is connected: parents at the top, their children below, and the grandchildren below them. It is a lovely school project, a gift for grandparents, or a first step into genealogy.
Most family tree websites want an account and ask for every detail. Here you just type your family as a list — the way you would write it on paper — and the tree is drawn for you, with the boxes, lines and spacing done automatically.
How to use it
- Type the oldest person or couple on the first line, like George Miller + Rose Miller
- Put their children on the next lines, indented with two spaces
- Indent grandchildren a little more, under their own parents
- Join a husband, wife or partner with +, and put dates in brackets: (1964)
- Pick a style — Classic, Elegant, Modern, Minimal, Leafy, Dark, Portraits or Playful
- Choose the colours, the box shape and the text size
- Click Download PNG or Download SVG — or Fullscreen to show the tree on a TV
Writing your family
- One line = one person or one couple. James Miller (1964) + Linda Park (1966)
- Children are indented under their parents. Use spaces (two per generation is easiest) or tabs
- Dates go in brackets after the name: (1941), (1938–2015) or (b. 1990)
- The line to a child goes to the first name on the child's line — so write the person born into the family first, and their partner after the +
- Several families can sit side by side: start another line with no spaces in front
Eight styles
- Classic — rounded boxes, one colour per generation; clear and simple
- Elegant — parchment paper, a serif font, thin gold lines and a double frame; lovely printed and framed
- Modern — solid coloured boxes with white names, for slides and reports
- Minimal — no boxes at all, just names, dates and fine lines
- Leafy — soft green with thick brown branches, like a real tree
- Dark — glowing boxes on a navy background, for screens
- Portraits — a circle with each person's initials, name and dates underneath
- Playful (the default) — rainbow colours and a round, friendly font; great for children's school projects
The style only changes the look. Your list stays the same, so you can try every style in a few clicks.
The settings
- One colour per generation — each generation gets its own colour, so the levels are easy to tell apart; or choose one colour for the whole tree
- Boxes — rounded, square or pill-shaped
- Text size and space — make a big tree fit, or make a small tree fill the page
- Show the dates — turn the years on or off
Ideas
- School project — "My family tree" with three or four generations
- Gift — print it as a poster for grandparents or a family reunion
- Wedding — both families side by side
- Research — keep your list in a note and add people as you find them
Frequently asked questions
How do I make a family tree online for free?
Type your family as a list: the oldest couple first, then their children on the lines below, indented with spaces. The tree appears as you type; download it as PNG or SVG.
How do I add a husband or wife?
Write both names on one line, joined by a plus sign: "James Miller + Linda Park". They are drawn side by side, joined by a line.
How do I show the children?
Put each child on its own line under the parents, indented with two spaces more than the parents' line.
Can I print my family tree?
Yes. Download the PNG and print it, or open the SVG for a sharp print at any size, even as a poster.
Can I show the family tree on a big screen?
Yes. Click Fullscreen and the tree fills the whole screen — nice for a family reunion, a birthday or a school presentation. Press Esc or × to go back.
Is my family information uploaded?
No. The tree is drawn in your browser, on your own device. Names and dates are not sent anywhere.
Good to know
- Big families make wide trees — lower the text size and the space to make them fit
- The SVG file can be opened in Inkscape, Illustrator or Figma to add photos or decorations
- Copy your list into a note to keep it; paste it back any time to update the tree
