About adding music to a video

A video without music can feel empty. A holiday clip, a product demo, a school project or a birthday slideshow all look better with a song behind them. Sometimes the original sound is just wind and noise, and you want to replace it.

This tool puts any audio file on any video. You choose whether the music replaces the sound or is mixed with it, how loud each one is, and where the music starts. Then you press play to hear it before anything is saved.

The picture is copied, not re-encoded, so the video keeps its full quality and even a long clip is ready in seconds.

How to use it

  • Click 1. Choose the video and pick your video
  • Click 2. Choose the music and pick a song or any audio file
  • Choose Replace the sound or Mix with the original sound
  • Set the volume, and where the music starts
  • Press play on the video to hear the result
  • Press Make video, check it, then click Download video

The settings

  • Replace the sound — the video's own sound is removed, only the music plays. Good for silent clips, timelapses and noisy outdoor videos.
  • Mix with the original sound — people still talk, and the music plays under them. Lower the music volume to about 20–40% so voices stay clear.
  • Music volume / Original sound volume — 100% is the file as it is. Up to 200% makes a quiet track louder.
  • Music starts at — wait a few seconds before the music comes in, for example after an intro.
  • Skip the start of the song — start the song at its chorus, or after a long intro.
  • Repeat the music — a short song plays again until the video ends. Each repeat starts from the beginning of the song.
  • Fade out — the music gets quieter over the last 3 seconds instead of stopping suddenly.

The video always keeps its own length. A song that is longer than the video is cut at the end.

Everything happens on your device

The tool uses ffmpeg, a professional video engine, compiled to WebAssembly and run inside your browser. Your video and your music are never uploaded. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no time limit.

The engine is about 30 MB and downloads once, the first time you use it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add music to a video for free?

Choose the video, choose the music, press play to check it, then press Make video and download the MP4. There is no watermark and no account.

Can I keep the people talking in my video?

Yes. Choose Mix with the original sound and set the music volume to about 30%, so the voices stay clear over the music.

Which files can I use?

Video: MP4, MOV, WebM, M4V and most phone videos. Music: MP3, M4A, AAC, WAV, OGG and FLAC. You can even use another video as the "music" — its sound track is used.

Will it lower the video quality?

No. The picture is copied as it is. Only the sound is new. (A few unusual video formats have to be re-encoded once; the tool does that by itself.)

Can I use any song?

The tool works with any file, but posting a video with someone else's music online may break copyright rules or the platform's rules. Use your own music, royalty-free music, or music you have a licence for.

Is my video uploaded?

No. Both files stay on your device. The video is made in your browser.

Good to know

  • The result is always an MP4 with AAC sound, which plays on every phone, computer and social site
  • Long or very large videos need a lot of memory; a computer handles them better than a phone
  • To cut the video first, use Trim Video; to cut the song, use Audio Trim
  • For music, voice-over and pictures on a timeline, use the Video Editor
