About Split Video
This free video splitter cuts one video into many smaller files. Choose a number of equal parts, or one part every 15, 30 or 60 seconds, or any time you type. You can also aim for a file size, such as 16 MB per part.
Each part has its own download link, and one link saves all the parts as a ZIP. The work happens in your browser. Your video is never uploaded.
Features
- Equal parts — cut a video into 2 to 300 parts of the same length
- By time — one part every 15, 30 or 60 seconds, or any time you type
- By file size — aim for parts of about 10, 16, 25 or 50 MB, or your own size
- See the plan first — a list shows each part with its start, end and length
- Fast mode — takes seconds and keeps the full quality, with no re-encoding
- Exact mode — cuts at the exact times when Fast mode is not close enough
- Play and download — play any part on the page, save it, or save all as one ZIP
- Private — nothing leaves your device
How to use it
- Click the box and choose your video, or drop it there. The name, length and size appear.
- Under Split by, choose Equal parts, Time or File size, then set the number.
- Choose Fast or Exact. Start with Fast.
- Check the plan. It lists every part and its times.
- Press Split. The first time, the page downloads the video engine (about 30 MB). Your browser keeps it for next time.
- Press the play button on a part to check it. Then press Download all as ZIP, or download only the parts you want.
Fast or Exact: which one to choose
A video is stored as a few full pictures, called key frames, and many small changes between them. A part must start on a key frame. That is why there are two modes.
| Fast | Exact | |
|---|---|---|
| Speed | Seconds | Much slower |
| Quality | The same as your video | Very close to your video |
| Cut point | The nearest key frame | The time you asked for |
| File type | Same as your video | Always MP4 |
Most phone and camera videos have a key frame every second or two, so Fast mode is usually all you need. A 30-second part may come out as 30.5 seconds.
Screen recordings can have very few key frames. Then Fast mode may make fewer parts than you planned. The page tells you, and one button runs the job again in Exact mode.
Exact mode is much slower because your browser makes a new copy of the whole video. A small video may take less time than it plays. A full HD video can take up to 10 times as long as it plays.
Which length or size to choose
| You want to | Try |
|---|---|
| Post short stories | 15 seconds |
| Post a status update | 30 seconds |
| Post short clips | 60 seconds |
| Watch a long recording in chapters | Equal parts |
| Send through a chat or e-mail with a limit | File size |
Apps change their limits often, so check the limit in your app before you start.
A size is an estimate, because busy scenes use more space than quiet ones. If a part is too big, try a smaller size.
Frequently asked questions
Does splitting a video lower the quality?
Not in Fast mode. The parts are copied from your video without any change. Exact mode makes a new copy, so there is a very small loss, but most people will not see it.
Why are my parts not exactly the same length?
Fast mode can cut only at a key frame, so each cut moves to the next one. This is usually less than a second or two. If you need exact lengths, use Exact mode.
Is my video uploaded?
No. The tool runs on your device. Your browser downloads the video engine once, and after that your video stays with you.
How big a video can I split?
Up to about 4 GB on a computer. Your browser holds the parts until you save them, so it needs about as much free room as the size of the video. A phone or a private window has much less room, and may stop at 1 or 2 GB or sooner. The page tells you when this happens.
Why did I get a file type other than MP4?
Fast mode keeps the type of your video, so a MOV gives MOV parts and a WebM gives WebM parts. Exact mode always makes MP4.
Is the sound kept?
Yes, in both modes.
Good to know
- Part files are named after your video, like holiday-part-01.mp4.
- A last part shorter than half a second joins the part before it.
- Subtitle tracks inside a video are not copied to the parts.
- Exact mode saves in normal colour, so HDR phone videos may look a little less bright.
- You can make up to 300 parts from one video.
- Your settings are saved in this browser for your next visit.
