About the subscription cost calculator

Ten dollars here, five there — subscriptions are easy to start and easy to forget. Most people underestimate what they spend on them. This calculator adds them all up, whatever the billing: weekly, monthly, every three or six months, or yearly.

You see the total per month, per year, per day and in five years. Each subscription gets a small bar showing how big it is next to the others. Untick one to see at once how much you would save by cancelling it.

How to use it

  • Type each subscription's name and price
  • Choose how often it is billed
  • Press Add a subscription for more
  • Read the totals
  • Untick the ones you could live without to see the saving

Where subscriptions hide

Check your bank and card statements for the last two months. Common ones:

  • Streaming — video, music, audiobooks, sports
  • Cloud storage — photos, files, backups
  • Apps and games — in-app subscriptions, game passes
  • Software — office, photo editing, antivirus, VPN
  • Memberships — gym, fitness apps, shopping clubs, delivery passes
  • News and magazines — digital and print
  • Boxes — meal kits, coffee, beauty, pet food
  • Phone and internet extras — insurance, add-ons, extra numbers

Example

SubscriptionPricePer year
Video streaming$15.49 / month$185.88
Music$11.99 / month$143.88
Cloud storage$2.99 / month$35.88
Gym$40 / month$480
Software$99 / year$99
Total$78.72 / month$944.64

Five subscriptions that each look small come to almost $950 a year — about $4,700 in five years.

Ways to cut the cost

  • Rotate streaming services — keep one at a time and switch every few months.
  • Pay yearly for the ones you keep — it is often 15–20% cheaper than monthly.
  • Use family plans and share them with your household.
  • Cancel free trials the day you start them — you keep access until the trial ends.
  • Ask for a better price — many services offer a discount when you start to cancel.

Frequently asked questions

How much does the average person spend on subscriptions?

It varies a lot, but surveys often find people spend much more than they think — commonly over $100 a month in the US. The only way to know your own number is to list them all.

How do I convert a yearly price to monthly?

Divide by 12. A $99 yearly subscription costs $8.25 a month. The calculator does this for every billing period.

How do I find all my subscriptions?

Look through two months of bank and card statements, the subscriptions list in your phone's app store (Settings on iPhone, Play Store on Android), and your email for "receipt" or "renewal".

What does unticking a subscription do?

It takes that subscription out of the totals and shows how much you would save per year without it. Nothing is cancelled — it only helps you decide.
