This free Split PDF tool lets you pull out the pages you want from a PDF — a single page, a range, or several ranges — or split the whole document into one file per page, delivered as a ZIP.

Everything runs in your browser — your PDF is never uploaded to a server.

How the page list is read

The box takes page numbers and ranges separated by commas, and it is more flexible than it looks.

• 1-3, 5, 8-10 takes pages 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 9 and 10
• Order is kept exactly as you type it. 5, 1-3 produces a PDF whose pages run 5, 1, 2, 3 — which is how you reorder a document as well as trim it
• Ranges can count backwards. 10-8 gives pages 10, 9, 8, so you can reverse a section without listing every page
• Repeats are ignored. 1-3, 2 yields three pages, not four; a page can only appear once
• Numbers outside the document are skipped, so asking for 1-999 of a twenty-page file simply gives you all twenty

Anything that is not a number or a start-end pair is ignored rather than treated as an error, so a stray space or a trailing comma does no harm.

What travels with the pages

The page itself comes across exactly: text stays text, images keep their resolution, vector drawing stays sharp, and the page size and rotation are preserved. Nothing is redrawn or re-compressed, so an extracted page is indistinguishable from the one you started with.

What does not always come across is the machinery that lives at the level of the document rather than the page. Bookmarks — the outline down the side of a PDF reader — belong to the document as a whole, so a new file built from a handful of pages does not inherit them. Links that point at another page can only work if that page came along too; a cross-reference to page 40 has nothing to point at in a file containing pages 1 to 3. Interactive form fields may keep their appearance while losing their behaviour, because the list that registers them is a document-level structure.

For the overwhelmingly common cases — a chapter, a scanned batch, a section to send on — none of this matters. If you are splitting a document whose bookmarks or form fields you rely on, open the result and check before you send it.

Good to know

• Works on Windows, macOS, Linux, ChromeOS, and on phones and tablets — it is a web page, and the PDF stays on your device
• Pages are copied, not re-rendered. The text stays selectable, images keep their original quality, and nothing is re-compressed
• Splitting into single pages always returns a ZIP, named after your file — report-page-01.pdf, report-page-02.pdf and so on
• The original file is never modified. You always get a new PDF and keep what you started with
• A PDF that opens without a password will split even if it carries usage restrictions; one that demands a password to open must be unlocked first
• There is no page limit beyond what your device can hold in memory
