What a watermark does, and what it does not do

A watermark is a deterrent, not a lock. The mark is added as an ordinary layer of page content, exactly like the text already in the document, so anyone with a full PDF editor can select it and delete it. That is true of every watermarking tool, not just this one, and it is worth knowing before you rely on one.

What it does well is make casual reuse awkward and obvious. A page stamped DRAFT across the middle cannot be quietly passed off as final, and a document carrying your company name is harder to circulate as someone else's work.

It is also not redaction. The watermark sits *over* the page; everything underneath is untouched and still selectable, searchable and copyable. If the point is to stop somebody reading something, remove it from the document rather than covering it.

Tiling raises the cost of removal. A single mark in one corner is one object to delete. The same text repeated across the page is dozens, each of them overlapping real content — tedious enough that most people will not bother. If you want a password rather than a deterrent, use Protect PDF.

How to use it

Good to know

• Works on Windows, macOS, Linux, ChromeOS, and on phones and tablets — it is a web page, and the PDF stays on your device
• The watermark text uses a standard Latin PDF font, so it can only draw Latin letters, digits and punctuation. Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Cyrillic and Greek text cannot be stamped, and the tool says so plainly rather than failing with a vague error
• The preview renders page 1, but the watermark is written to every page when you download
• Accented Latin text is fine — Vertraulich, Brouillon, Borrador, Größe all stamp correctly
• Opacity defaults to a light 25%, which is usually enough to read the mark without drowning the page. Push it higher for a mark meant to be unmissable
• The rest of the document is copied through untouched — the tool adds a layer, it does not re-render or re-compress your pages
