Choosing the format and the resolution

A PDF page is usually vector artwork — instructions for drawing shapes and letters at any size. Turning it into an image means rasterising it: fixing it to a grid of pixels at one chosen scale. That choice is the only one that really matters here, because you cannot get detail back afterwards.

The scale multiplies the PDF's own 72-per-inch coordinate space, so:

• Standard (1×) — about 72 DPI. Fine for a quick on-screen look or a thumbnail
• High (1.5×) — about 108 DPI. A good default for sharing and for most screens
• Very high (2×) — about 144 DPI. Comfortable for reading dense text on a high-resolution display
• Maximum (3×) — about 216 DPI. What you want for printing, or for feeding text into OCR

Format matters just as much. JPG suits photographs and scanned pages, and keeps files small. PNG suits text, diagrams, charts and line art, because JPG compression scatters faint smudges around sharp edges — exactly where letters have theirs. If a page is mostly type and you plan to read it, choose PNG.

One thing the scale cannot do is invent detail that was never captured. If the PDF is itself a scan — a photograph of a page rather than real text — its resolution was fixed by the scanner. Rendering at 3× produces a larger copy of that same scan, not a sharper one. High scales pay off on pages made of real text and vector drawing; on a page that is already a picture, they only cost you disk space.

Good to know

• Works on Windows, macOS, Linux, ChromeOS, and on phones and tablets — it is a web page, and the PDF stays on your device
• Higher scales cost memory as well as disk. A long document at Maximum on an older phone can be slow; drop a step if it struggles
• The text becomes pixels, so it is no longer selectable or searchable. To get words back out of a page, use Image to Text
• Pages are named after your file — report-page-01.jpg, report-page-02.jpg — so they stay in order in a folder
• Every page is rendered, including blank ones; a blank page becomes a white image rather than being skipped
• The ZIP is built on your device too, so a hundred-page document never leaves it
