About the spelling worksheet generator

Every week there is a new spelling list. This tool turns it into a practice sheet in seconds. Type your words — one per line, up to 40 — and choose a worksheet type:

  • Write each word on lines — the word in grey to trace, then empty handwriting lines with a dashed middle line
  • Look, cover, write, check — the classic method: look at the word, cover it, write it, then check. Two tries per word
  • Unscramble the letters — the letters in boxes in a mixed order, and a line to write the word
  • Fill in the missing letters — some letters are left out; kids fill them in and write the whole word

The last two come with an answer key on the final page. Pick colours and a heading style, add a name and date line, and download or print the PDF.

How to use it

  • Type a title, for example "Spelling Week 12"
  • Type your spelling words — one per line
  • Choose the worksheet type
  • For "write each word", choose how many lines for each word — 1 to 4
  • Pick the colours, the heading style and the paper (A4 or US Letter)
  • Press Shuffle again to get new scrambled or missing-letter puzzles
  • Download the PDF or press Print

Which type is best?

TypeGood for
Write each word on linesHandwriting and learning new words
Look, cover, write, checkLearning to spell from memory — the proven method
Unscramble the lettersA fun review that makes kids think about letter order
Fill in the missing lettersSpotting the tricky part of a word

The look-cover-write-check method

  1. Look at the word and say it aloud
  2. Cover it with your hand or fold the paper
  3. Write the word from memory in the first box
  4. Check — does it match? Tick the circle, or try again in the second box

The sheet has a column for each step, so the child can see their own progress.

Tips

  • Start with 5 to 10 words a week for younger children
  • Mix easy and tricky words
  • Use words from your own reading list, a school list or the child's own mistakes
  • Try a different type each day: write on Monday, unscramble on Tuesday, look-cover-write-check on Wednesday
  • Let the child grade the sheet with the answer key

Frequently asked questions

Can I use words in other languages?

Yes. The sheets work with any alphabet, one character at a time — also for accented letters and for languages like German, French, Spanish, Russian or Greek.

How many words can I use?

Up to 40 words, and each word up to 24 characters. The sheet adds pages when it needs them.

Are there answers?

Yes, for Unscramble and Missing letters. They are on the last page. Switch them off with the tick box if you do not want them.

Why are my missing letters different each time?

They are picked at random. Press Shuffle again for a new set, or keep the page open to print the same one.

Is the first letter always shown?

Yes, for words with four or more letters, so the puzzle is fair.

Is the tool free?

Yes. Everything is made in your browser. Your words are not uploaded.
