About the handwriting worksheet maker

Children learn to write by tracing first and then writing on their own. A worksheet with their own name, this week's spelling words or a sentence from class works much better than a generic alphabet sheet.

This tool makes those sheets in seconds. Type any letters, words or sentences, and you get a printable PDF with dotted letters to trace on proper school guide lines, followed by empty rows to write on.

How to use it

  • Type the letters, a name, words or sentences — one per line
  • Choose the worksheet type: trace then write, trace only, or copy
  • Choose how many extra rows each line gets, and the letter size
  • Keep the Name and Date lines if you want them
  • Check the preview, then click Download PDF or Print

Three kinds of worksheet

  • Trace, then write — one row of dotted letters to trace, then empty rows to write the same thing alone. The classic practice sheet
  • Trace only — every row is dotted. For the youngest children, or for new letters
  • Copy — a solid example to look at, then empty rows. For children who already write but practise neatness

School guide lines

Every row has the three lines children know from school:

  • A top line — tall letters (b, d, h, capitals) reach it
  • A dashed middle line — small letters (a, c, e, o) reach it
  • A red baseline — every letter sits on it, and the tails of g, j, p, q and y hang below it

Letter sizes

  • Large — about 16 mm tall capitals. For preschool and kindergarten
  • Medium — about 11 mm. For grades 1 and 2
  • Small — about 7.5 mm. For grades 3 and up, and for adults practising neat writing

A clear, child-friendly font

The letters use Andika, a typeface made for children learning to read. It has the simple a and g that children are taught to write (not the printed "two-storey" shapes), and letters that are easy to tell apart.

What people use it for

  • Name tracing for preschoolers — their own name, many times
  • Alphabet practice — Aa Bb Cc, a few letters at a time
  • Spelling words of the week
  • Sight words and short sentences
  • Homeschool and tutoring sheets
  • Adults improving their handwriting

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a name tracing worksheet?

Type the child's name on the first line, choose Trace, then write, and pick Large letters. The worksheet shows the name in dotted letters to trace, followed by empty rows to practise writing it alone.

Is the handwriting worksheet maker free?

Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many worksheets you make.

What size should the letters be?

Large for preschool and kindergarten, Medium for grades 1 and 2, and Small for grade 3 and up. When in doubt, start larger — it is easier for small hands.

Can I make worksheets in other languages?

Yes, for languages written with Latin letters, including accents like é, ü, ñ and ç. Other alphabets are not supported yet.

Does it make cursive worksheets?

Not yet. The letters are print (manuscript) style, which is what children learn first.
