About the maze generator

A maze is one of the best quiet-time activities for kids: it trains focus, planning and the pencil control needed for writing. This generator makes a new maze every time, in four sizes from Easy (big squares, for the youngest) to Very hard (tiny squares, for older kids and adults).

Each maze has exactly one way from the START at the top left to the FINISH at the bottom right, and there are no loops. Choose the title, the colours and the heading style, add a name and time line, and press New mazes for fresh ones. The solutions come on the last pages.

The PDF fits the paper you choose — A4 or US Letter, portrait or landscape — and the size of the squares stays the same, so a bigger page gives a bigger maze.

How to use it

  • Type a title — or keep "Maze"
  • Choose the size: Easy, Medium, Hard or Very hard
  • Choose the number of mazes — each maze gets its own page
  • Pick the colours and the heading style, and the paper
  • Tick Add a name and time line and Solutions at the end if you want them
  • Press New mazes for a different set, then Download or Print

How the mazes are made

The generator uses a method called the recursive backtracker. It starts in the top-left square, walks to a random square next to it that it has not visited, and removes the wall between them. When it reaches a dead end it goes back until it finds a square with a new way to go. The result is a "perfect" maze: every square can be reached, and there is one single path between any two squares.

That gives long winding corridors with many dead ends — the type of maze kids like most.

Ideas for using mazes

  • A quiet activity for a trip, a restaurant or a rainy day
  • A warm-up for handwriting: ask kids to follow the path with a pencil, then with a crayon
  • A race: who finds the way first?
  • Party bags and classroom rewards
  • Make a maze for someone else to solve — a game of fair play with a timer

Frequently asked questions

Can I print a maze with the solution?

Yes. Keep Solutions at the end ticked. After the mazes you get one solution page for each maze, with the path in colour.

Is every maze different?

Yes. Press New mazes and you get a new set. The same maze comes back only if you change the title, colours or paper — not the maze itself.

What paper sizes work?

A4 and US Letter, in portrait or landscape. The squares keep their size, so the maze has more or fewer squares depending on the page.

Can I make mazes for a worksheet with other tasks?

Yes. Download the PDF and add it to your own pages, or print the maze with the name line for a class.

Are the mazes always solvable?

Yes. Each one has exactly one solution, and the generator checks the path when it makes the solution page.

Is it free?

Yes. The mazes are made in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
