About converting text to PDF

A .txt file is the simplest kind of document: just letters, no layout. It opens everywhere, but it does not print well — long lines run off the page, and every app shows it with a different font.

This tool lays your text out on real PDF pages: the paper size, margins, font, font size and line spacing you choose, with long lines wrapped and optional page numbers. The text in the PDF is real text, so it can be selected, searched and copied.

Type or paste text, or open one or many .txt files at once. The PDF is made in your browser — nothing is uploaded.

Features

  • Paste or open files — type, paste, or open and drop several .txt files at once
  • Many files — into one PDF (each file starts on a new page) or one PDF per file in a ZIP
  • Page setup — Letter, A4, Legal or A5; portrait or landscape; narrow, normal or wide margins
  • Three fonts — sans-serif, serif or monospace (good for code, logs and tables made of spaces), 8 to 24 pt
  • Line spacing — 1.0, 1.15, 1.5 or double
  • Page numbers and file name header — optional, in small grey type
  • Selectable text — real PDF text, not a picture, in a small file
  • Live preview of page 1, and one click to download

Letters and languages

  • English and Western European text uses the PDF's built-in fonts (Helvetica, Times or Courier). Nothing to download, and the file stays tiny.
  • Polish, Czech, Turkish, Greek, Russian, Ukrainian, Vietnamese and other Latin, Greek and Cyrillic text uses the free Noto font of the style you chose. Only the letters you use are put in the file.
  • Chinese, Japanese and Korean are drawn with Noto CJK fonts as shapes. They print and look right, but that part of the text cannot be selected in the PDF.
  • Emoji, Arabic, Hebrew, Thai and Indian scripts are not supported yet. They show as "?", and the tool tells you how many.
  • Old Windows text files (ANSI) and UTF-16 files are read correctly, not only UTF-8.

Common uses

  • Print a text file with proper margins and page numbers
  • Send notes, logs or a README as a PDF that opens the same on every device
  • Hand in plain-text homework or code as a PDF
  • Archive chat exports, transcripts or e-mails saved as .txt
  • Turn a folder of .txt files into one PDF to read or print in one go

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a TXT file to PDF?

Click Open .txt files (or drop the file on the text box), choose the page size and font, and click Download PDF. The PDF updates as you change the settings, so it is always ready.

Can I convert many text files at once?

Yes. Open or drop several .txt files together. Choose One PDF to put them all in one document — each file starts on a new page — or One PDF per file (ZIP) to get a separate PDF for each.

Can I select and copy the text in the PDF?

Yes. The text is written as real PDF text, so you can select it, search it with Ctrl+F and copy it. Only Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters are drawn as shapes and cannot be selected.

Which font should I use for code or log files?

Monospace. Every letter is the same width, so columns that are lined up with spaces stay lined up. Tabs become four spaces.

Can I start a new page wherever I want?

Yes. A form-feed character — the "page break" character that some older programs put in text files — starts a new page.

Is my text uploaded?

No. The PDF is made in your browser, on your own device. Pasted text is kept only in this browser, so you do not lose it if you close the tab.

How to use it

  • Type or paste your text — or click Open .txt files, or drop files on the text box
  • With several files, choose One PDF or One PDF per file (ZIP)
  • Choose the page size, orientation, margins, font, font size and line spacing
  • Tick Page numbers or File name at the top of each page if you want them
  • Check the preview, then click Download PDF
