About Thumbnail Maker
This thumbnail maker turns your own picture into a video thumbnail. Choose a photo, pick one of 8 styles, type a few big words and download the file. The result is 1280 × 720 pixels, the size YouTube asks for. There is no watermark, no account and no upload. Everything happens in your browser.
It is made for your own pictures only. You choose a photo from your device. The tool does not take pictures from YouTube or any other site, and it has no box for a video link.
Features
- Four sizes — 1280 × 720 for YouTube, 1920 × 1080, 1080 × 1920 for Shorts and TikTok covers, and 1080 × 1080 square.
- Three text layers — a headline, a second line and a small tag. Each has its own font, colour, size and tilt.
- Outline, glow and boxes — a thick outline, a shadow or glow, and a box or ribbon behind the words.
- 8 styles — one click sets the text, colours and dark fade. Then change anything you like.
- Photo controls — zoom, drag, brightness, contrast, colour, blur, dark corners and a one-click Pop.
- Stickers — red or yellow arrows and circles that we draw, plus emoji from your device.
- Safe area guide — shows where the time stamp covers the corner. It is not saved in the file.
- 2 MB check — JPG quality is lowered by itself to stay under 2 MB, and the file size is shown.
How to use it
- Click the box or drop a picture of your own. HEIC photos from an iPhone work too.
- Choose a size. 1280 × 720 is the YouTube size.
- Click a style. Then type your words in the Headline, Second line and Tag tabs.
- Drag the words on the picture to move them. Drag the photo to change what shows.
- Add an arrow, a circle or an emoji if it helps. Use the safe area guide to keep key things out of the corner.
- Check the file size under the picture, then press the download button. The file is ready as soon as the status shows the size.
Thumbnail size: 1280x720
YouTube asks for a thumbnail of 1280 × 720 pixels (16:9), at least 640 pixels wide, as JPG, PNG or GIF, and 2 MB or less. Always check YouTube Help for the latest rules, because they can change.
| Use | Size | Ratio |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube video | 1280 × 720 | 16:9 |
| Full HD video | 1920 × 1080 | 16:9 |
| Shorts or TikTok cover | 1080 × 1920 | 9:16 |
| Square post | 1080 × 1080 | 1:1 |
A PNG of 1280 × 720 can be bigger than 2 MB if the photo has a lot of detail. A JPG is much smaller. With "Under 2 MB" chosen, this tool lowers the JPG quality step by step until the file fits, and tells you the final size.
What makes a thumbnail work
Nobody can promise a thumbnail will get views. But a few simple habits help people read it at a glance, and most viewers see it very small, often on a phone.
- Few words. Three or four words are easier to read than a sentence. Leave the details for the title.
- Big text with an outline. A thick outline in a dark colour keeps light words readable on a busy photo.
- One clear subject. A face, a product or one object. Crop in close with the zoom slider.
- Contrast. A bright subject on a darker background stands out. The dark fade and Pop button help.
- Keep corners free. The time stamp covers the bottom-right corner, so do not put words there.
- Be honest. Show what the video really contains. A thumbnail that does not match the video makes people leave.
Text outline, shadow and glow
The outline is drawn first and the fill on top, so letters keep their shape. Try yellow with a black outline. Glow suits dark photos. The outline also works for Chinese, Japanese and Korean text, as long as your device has a font for it.
Shorts and TikTok covers
Choose 1080 × 1920 for a vertical cover. Turn on the safe area guide: it marks the bottom band and the right side, where the app shows its own text and buttons. The marks are only a guide. Different apps and phones place their buttons a little differently.
Frequently asked questions
Is this thumbnail maker free, with no watermark?
Yes. It is free, there is no watermark and you do not need an account.
Is my picture uploaded?
No. The picture stays in your browser. The tool works on your device and makes the file there.
Can I get a thumbnail from a YouTube video with it?
No. This tool only edits a picture you choose yourself. It does not download thumbnails or videos from YouTube or any other site.
How do I keep the file under 2 MB?
Choose JPG and keep "Under 2 MB" selected. The quality is lowered step by step until the file fits. The size is shown under the picture. If you need a sharper file, choose PNG, but check its size.
Can I cut out the person from the background first?
Yes. Use the Remove Background tool, save the PNG, then drop it here. The empty area shows the "Colour behind the photo" you choose.
Good to know
- The fonts come from your device. Impact is on Windows and Mac; some phones show a similar bold font. The preview always matches the file.
- Brightness, colour and blur need canvas filters. Very old Safari does not have them, and the page says so.
- The Blur slider blurs the whole photo. It does not find the subject by itself.
