About GIF to MP4

GIFs are fun, but they are huge and many places do not take them: Instagram, TikTok, WhatsApp status and most video editors want a video. This free GIF to MP4 converter turns your animated GIF into an MP4 (H.264) file that plays on every phone, computer and website — usually many times smaller than the GIF.

A GIF loops forever; a video plays once. So you can repeat the loop 2, 3, 5 or 10 times, and a 2-second GIF becomes a 10-second clip. If the GIF has see-through parts, you choose the colour that fills them (MP4 has no transparency).

It runs in your browser with ffmpeg. Your GIF is never uploaded.

Features

  • GIF → MP4 (H.264) — plays on iPhone, Android, Windows, Mac and every browser
  • Much smaller files — the page shows the size before and after
  • Repeat the loop 1, 2, 3, 5 or 10 times for a longer video
  • Transparent GIFs — pick the background colour (found by itself)
  • Size — keep the original, or cap at 720p or 480p
  • Quality — high, normal, or a smaller file
  • Preview — play the MP4 on the page before you save it
  • Private — converted on your device, nothing uploaded

Why turn a GIF into an MP4?

  • Smaller: a GIF can only use 256 colours per frame and stores every frame almost whole. H.264 video stores only what changes, so the same animation is often 5 to 20 times smaller.
  • Accepted everywhere: Instagram, TikTok, YouTube Shorts and WhatsApp status take MP4, not GIF.
  • Better to edit: video editors (CapCut, Premiere, iMovie) handle MP4 much better than GIF.

The video is made the way phones and social apps like it: H.264 at a steady 30 frames per second (50 for very fast GIFs), yuv420p colours, even width and height, and the "fast start" index at the front, so it starts playing at once online. GIF animations have no sound, so the MP4 has none either.

Transparent GIFs

MP4 video cannot be see-through. When your GIF has transparent pixels, the colour box appears, and those parts are filled with that colour — white by default. Pick the colour of the page or post where the video will go, and it will look the same as the GIF did.

Common uses

  • Post a GIF to Instagram, TikTok or WhatsApp status
  • Make a short reaction GIF long enough for a story (repeat it 5×)
  • Shrink a big GIF so it can be sent or uploaded
  • Put a GIF into a video editor or a presentation

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a GIF to MP4?

Drop the GIF on the box. Choose how many times the loop should play, the size and the quality, then press Convert to MP4. When it is done, click Download MP4 right under the button.

Why is the MP4 so much smaller than the GIF?

GIF stores almost every frame in full with only 256 colours. MP4 (H.264) stores only the parts that change from frame to frame and compresses them far better.

Can I make the GIF loop several times in the video?

Yes. Choose 2×, 3×, 5× or 10× under Play the loop. The page shows how long the video will be.

What happens to a transparent GIF?

MP4 has no transparency, so the see-through parts are filled with the colour you pick (white by default).

Will the MP4 work on Instagram and iPhone?

Yes. It is H.264 in yuv420p with even dimensions and fast start — the format phones and social apps expect. Some apps have a minimum length (often 3 seconds); repeat the loop to reach it.

Is my GIF uploaded?

No. The video engine (ffmpeg) runs in your browser. The first time, it downloads about 30 MB; after that it is fast.

How to use it

  • Drop your GIF on the box, or click it to choose one
  • Choose how many times to play the loop, the size and the quality
  • For a transparent GIF, pick the background colour
  • Press Convert to MP4
  • Click Download MP4 — it appears right under the button, with a preview
