About dark mode for PDFs

Your phone and your apps have a dark mode, but most PDFs are still black text on bright white pages. Reading one in bed or late at night is hard on the eyes.

This tool makes a dark version of your PDF: the white pages become dark, and the black text becomes light. It works in any PDF reader — the dark colours are in the file itself, so you do not need a special app or setting.

Your pages are not turned into pictures. The text stays real text: it is just as sharp when you zoom in, and you can still select, search and copy it. The PDF is never uploaded.

Features

  • Four dark styles — soft dark grey, pure black, warm sepia or night blue
  • Photos keep their real colours — pictures are found and left as they were (you can turn this off)
  • Sharp, searchable text — no page is turned into an image, so the file stays small
  • No special app needed — the dark colours are in the file, so it opens dark in your usual PDF reader
  • Before and after preview of page 1
  • One click to download — the dark PDF is ready as soon as you open the file or change the style

Which dark style?

  • Soft dark grey (the default) — dark grey pages with light grey text. Less contrast than pure black, which most people find calmer for long reading.
  • Pure black — black pages and white text. The darkest choice, and on OLED phone screens black pixels use almost no power.
  • Warm sepia — dark brown pages with cream text. Less blue light, closer to a paper book under a lamp.
  • Night blue — dark blue pages with soft white text.

Colours are turned around too: a light yellow box becomes dark blue, a dark red heading becomes light cyan. That keeps light and dark parts apart, so everything stays readable.

How it works

Nothing in your PDF is redrawn. Each page gets a few extra see-through layers that use the PDF's own blend modes: one layer inverts every colour (white ↔ black), another inverts each photo back to its real colours, and the last one softens black to grey or sepia. Blend modes have been part of the PDF standard for more than twenty years, so common readers draw them the same way.

We checked the result in three PDF engines — PDFium (Chrome and Edge), pdf.js (Firefox) and MuPDF (used by many phone and e-reader apps): the pages come out dark, photos keep their colours, and the text can still be selected and copied.

Common uses

  • Read e-books, papers and manuals at night without a bright white screen
  • Read on a phone or tablet in bed without waking anyone
  • Long study sessions with textbooks and lecture notes
  • Reading on a laptop at night — in a car, on a plane, in a dark room
  • Light sensitivity or migraines — many people find light text on dark easier on the eyes

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a PDF dark?

Upload the PDF, choose a dark style, and click Download dark PDF. Open the new file in any PDF reader — the pages are dark.

Can I still search and copy the text?

Yes. The text is not touched — the dark look is a layer on top. Search with Ctrl+F, select and copy as usual.

What happens to photos?

With Keep photos in their real colours ticked, the tool finds each picture on the page and keeps its colours. A picture that fills most of the page — a scanned page, or a full-page background — is made dark with the rest of the page. Untick the box to invert photos too.

Does it work on scanned PDFs?

Yes. A scanned page is one big picture, so it is made dark like the rest: light paper turns dark and dark ink turns light.

Should I print the dark PDF?

No — it would use a lot of ink or toner. Keep the original for printing. To save ink instead, use Black and White PDF.

Why do some form fields or highlights stay light?

Form fields, comments and highlights sit on top of the page, so the dark layers do not reach them. Lock form answers into the page first with Flatten PDF, then make it dark.
