Animated GIF — compressed in your browser, never uploaded

Video and audio are processed in your browser by FFmpeg (ffmpeg.wasm), free software under the GPL-2.0-or-later and MIT licenses — licenses & source.

About compressing GIFs

Animated GIFs are heavy. A few seconds of animation can be 10 or 20 MB — too big for Discord, Slack, email, a website or a forum signature.

This tool makes a GIF smaller while keeping it animated. You choose how: fewer colours, fewer frames per second, or fewer pixels. The original and the result play side by side, so you can see the difference before you download.

How to use it

  • Click Click to upload, or drop your GIF onto the box
  • Choose the number of colours, the frame rate and the size
  • Press Compress GIF — the first run downloads the engine
  • Compare the two animations and the file sizes
  • Click Download GIF

What makes a GIF big — and the three controls

  • Colours — a GIF can use up to 256 colours. The tool picks the best colours for *your* animation, so 128 usually looks the same as 256, and 64 is fine for cartoons, text and screen recordings
  • Frame rate — a GIF made from video often has 25–30 frames per second. 15 fps still looks smooth; 10 fps is fine for most reactions and memes. Fewer frames is the biggest saving on long GIFs
  • Size — 75% of the width and height is about half the pixels; 50% is a quarter

Start with 128 colours and the rest unchanged. If the file is still too big, lower the frame rate, then the size.

Common size limits

  • Discord — 10 MB for most users
  • Slack and many forums — often 2–5 MB for a smooth upload
  • Email — keep it under 1–2 MB so it loads quickly
  • Websites — under 1 MB keeps pages fast

Everything happens on your device

The compressor is a real video engine (ffmpeg) compiled to WebAssembly and run inside your browser. Your GIF is never uploaded, there is no sign-up and no watermark.

The engine is about 30 MB and downloads once, the first time you use it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a GIF smaller?

Upload it, choose fewer colours (128 or 64), and press Compress GIF. If it is still too big, lower the frame rate to 15 or 10 fps, or reduce the size to 75%.

Will the GIF still be animated?

Yes. Every setting keeps the animation and the loop. A lower frame rate shows fewer frames per second, but the animation keeps the same length.

How do I compress a GIF for Discord?

Most Discord users can upload up to 10 MB. Start with 128 colours; for a long GIF also choose 15 fps or 75% size, and check that the result is under 10 MB.

Is my GIF uploaded?

No. The compression runs in your browser, on your own device.

Why did the size not go down?

Some GIFs are already well optimized. Try fewer colours, a lower frame rate or a smaller size. If the result is not smaller, the tool keeps your original.

Good to know

  • Transparent GIFs keep their transparency
  • Very long or very large GIFs use a lot of memory; a computer handles them better than a phone
  • To make a GIF from a video, use Video to GIF
  • To add a watermark first, use Add Watermark to GIF
