To-Do List

Add tasks, tick them off, keep them in your browser.

100% private — runs entirely in your browser. Your data is processed on your device and never sent to the internet.

Your list

Click any task to change it Drag a task by its handle to reorder. With the keyboard, focus a task and press Alt with the up or down arrow.

Saved as you type — reload the page or close the tab and your list is still here. It is kept in this browser only: never uploaded, so it is not on your other devices, and clearing your browsing data erases it.

    About the To-Do List

Type a task, press Enter, and it joins the list. Tick the box when it is finished. That is the whole tool.

It is here because most to-do apps ask for an account before they will let you write down "buy milk". This one asks for nothing: no sign-up, no email address, no app to install, no server. The list lives in your browser and saves itself the instant you type. Reload the page, close the tab, close the browser or switch the computer off — your tasks are still there when you come back, tonight or next week.

A finished task is not wiped away. It stays where it is, ticked and struck through, so you can see what you have got through today rather than staring at an empty box. When you want the finished ones out of sight, switch to To do. When you want them gone for good, press Clear finished.

There is no free tier, no paid tier and no limit on how many tasks you add.

    Marking a task as done

This is the part most people come for, so it is worth spelling out.

    • Tick the box at the left of a task. The text goes grey and gets a line through it, the row fades back, and the bar at the top moves.
    • Tick it again to bring the task back. Nothing is deleted by ticking, ever.
    • A finished task keeps its place in the list. Lists that jump a task to the bottom the moment you tick it make you lose your place, and turn the next tick into a game of chase.
    • The counter reads "3 of 8 done" and the bar beside it fills as you work through the list.
    • Clear finished removes the ticked ones permanently. It tells you how many will go and asks before it does it, and it never touches the unfinished ones.

If you would rather see only what is left, press To do — the finished tasks are still there, just hidden until you press All again.

    Where your list is kept

Everything is stored in this browser, in the part of it a website is allowed to keep small amounts of data in. In plain terms:

    • Nothing is ever sent to us or to anyone else. There is no server to send it to.
    • Reloading the page, closing the tab, closing the browser and shutting the computer down all keep the list. Every change is written the instant you make it, so there is no Save button and nothing to lose by walking away.
    • It is tied to this browser on this device. Your phone has its own list. Chrome and Firefox on the same computer have their own lists.
    • Clearing your browsing data erases it, as does "clear cookies and site data" for this page.
    • A private or incognito window usually cannot save at all. If yours refuses, the tool says so instead of pretending the list is safe.

If the list matters, press Download .txt now and again. It is the one honest way to keep a copy that survives a cleared browser.

    Putting the list in order

A new task goes to the top of the list, where you are already looking, and everything else keeps its place. Nothing is ever sorted for you.

    To change the order:

    • Drag a task by the handle on its left, up or down the list.
    • Or use the keyboard — click a task once so it is focused, then hold Alt and press the up or down arrow.

Reordering works while a filter is on. If you move a task one place down while To do is showing, it moves one place down *in that view*; the finished tasks it skipped over stay exactly where they were.

    The three views

The buttons at the top of the board decide what you are looking at, and each one shows its own count.

    • All — everything, finished and not. This is the working view.
    • To do — only what is left. Good for the last hour of the day, when the finished half of the list is just noise.
    • Done — only what is finished. Good for writing a progress update, or for remembering what you actually did.

Adding a task while Done is showing switches you back to All, because a new task is not finished and would otherwise vanish the moment you typed it.

    Taking the list somewhere else

    • Copy list puts the whole thing on your clipboard as plain text, with [x] for finished tasks and [ ] for the rest. Paste it into a message, an email, a ticket or a note.
    • Download .txt saves the same plain text as a file.
    • Download PDF builds a clean A4 sheet: the title, the count, and every task on its own line with an empty square to tick or a green tick already there. Finished tasks are greyed and struck through, so the sheet still makes sense printed in black and white.

All three are built on your device. No file is uploaded to make them.

    Common questions

Is this to-do list really free? Yes, all of it. There is no account, no trial, no paid tier and no feature held back.

Do I need to sign up? No. There is nothing to sign up to. Open the page and start typing.

Will my list still be there tomorrow? Yes, as long as you use the same browser on the same device and do not clear your browsing data.

Is the list saved if I reload the page? Yes. Every task is written to your browser the instant you add, tick, edit or move it, so a reload or a refresh brings back exactly what you had — including which of the three views you were in. There is no Save button because there is nothing to press. A small Saved mark appears beside the counter each time it writes, so you can watch it happen.

What if I close the tab by accident? Nothing is lost. Open the page again and the list is as you left it.

Does closing the browser or switching the computer off lose my tasks? No. The list is written to your disk, not held in the page's memory, so it survives closing the browser, powering off, and coming back days later.

Does it sync to my phone? No. Syncing needs a server holding your tasks, and there is no server — that is the trade for not needing an account. Use Copy list or Download .txt to move a list between devices.

Can other people see my tasks? No. They never leave your browser. Anyone using the same browser profile on the same computer would see them, so a shared family computer is worth thinking about.

How do I mark a task as done? Click the square box on its left. Click it again to undo.

Does ticking a task delete it? No. It stays on the list, ticked. Only Clear finished, Clear all and the × on a task actually remove anything.

Why does a finished task stay in place instead of moving to the bottom? So you do not lose your place. If you want them out of the way, press To do, which hides them without moving anything.

How do I edit a task I typed wrong? Click the task text, change it, and press Enter. Press Escape to abandon the change.

How do I delete a single task? Press the × at the right of the row. You can also clear the text while editing it — an empty task is removed.

Can I undo a delete? No. That is why both clear buttons ask first, and why a download is worth taking before a big clear-out.

How many tasks can I add? There is no limit set by the tool. A browser gives a site a few megabytes, and a task costs well under a hundred bytes, so a list of thousands is not a problem.

Can I reorder tasks? Yes — drag a task by the handle on its left, or focus it and press Alt with the up or down arrow.

Can I print my to-do list? Yes. Download PDF gives an A4 sheet with real tick boxes, sized to tick with a pen. For a repeating list that you print week after week, the Printable Checklist Maker is a better fit.

Does it work offline? Once the page has loaded, adding, ticking, editing and reordering all work with no connection. The PDF download needs the page to have loaded its PDF library first.

Does it work on a phone? Yes. Ticking, editing and deleting all work by touch. Dragging to reorder is a desktop feature — on a phone, delete the task and add it again where you want it.

Can I have more than one list? Not in this tool — there is one list. For a second list, use a different browser profile, or keep the second list in the Online Notepad.

Are there due dates, reminders or notifications? No. This is a plain list on purpose. For anything time-based, the Timer & Stopwatch and the Pomodoro Timer sit alongside it.

What happens at midnight — does the list reset? No, nothing resets. The list is exactly as you left it. If you want a fresh page every day with yesterday filed away, that is the Daily Log.

    Good to know

    • This browser only. The list is not on your phone, not on your other computer and not in any account. There is no sync because there is no server.
    • Clearing your browsing data erases it. So does "clear cookies and site data" for this page. Press Download .txt if losing it would hurt.
    • Private windows often cannot save at all. The tool tells you if the browser refuses, rather than losing your work silently.
    • Dragging is a desktop thing. Touch screens do not fire the drag events this uses, so on a phone reorder by deleting and re-adding.
    • Tasks written in Chinese, Japanese or Korean are drawn as shapes in the PDF. Every character prints correctly, but the text inside that PDF cannot be selected or searched.
    • Your tasks are never sorted, grouped or re-ranked for you. The order on screen is the order you chose.

    How to use it

    • Type a task in the box at the top and press Enter
    • Keep adding lines — each new one appears at the top of the list
    • Tick the box next to a task when it is finished
    • Click the task text to change the wording, then press Enter
    • Drag the handle at the left of a task to move it up or down the list
    • Press To do to hide what is finished, or Done to see only what is
    • Press Copy list, Download .txt or Download PDF to take the list somewhere else
    • Press Clear finished to remove the ticked tasks once you are done with them
