About the poster printer
Want a big poster but only have a normal printer? This tool cuts one picture into many pages. You print the pages, trim them, and glue them together. The result is a poster of any size.
Pick how many pages you want, or the size of the final poster. The tool picks the best paper direction, draws every page, and puts them in one PDF. Your picture never leaves your device.
Features
- Pages or size — choose 2 × 2, 3 × 3, 4 × 4 or your own columns and rows, or type the poster size you want
- Common paper — Letter, A4, Legal or A3, in portrait or landscape, or let the tool pick the best one
- Margin and overlap — keep a printer-safe margin (0 to 15 mm) and add overlap (0 to 20 mm) so pages can be trimmed and glued
- Fill or fit — crop the picture to the poster shape, or keep all of it with white bars; drag to choose the crop
- Cut marks and numbers — corner marks to trim by, and a small "Row 2 · Column 3" label on every page
- Assembly map — an optional first sheet that shows where every page goes
- Sharpness check — pixels per inch, with a clear warning when the picture is too small
- One PDF — one download, or all the pages as images in a ZIP
How to use it
- Choose a picture, or drop it on the box
- Pick the number of pages, or switch to "Final poster size" and choose a size
- Choose your paper. Leave the direction on automatic
- Drag the picture in the preview to choose what is cut off
- Set the margin and overlap, and tick the options you want
- Read the sharpness line. If it is red, use a smaller poster
- Press "Download poster PDF" and print at 100% (actual size)
How to put the poster together
- Print every page at 100%. Do not use "fit to page".
- Cut along the corner marks to take off the margin.
- Start at Row 1, Column 1. Lay Column 2 over the overlap strip so the picture lines up. Glue or tape it.
- Add the next page in the same way. Finish the row, then the next row.
- Trim the poster edges with a ruler and a sharp knife.
Poster size and pages needed
This table shows how many pages you need with a 10 mm margin and no overlap. More overlap needs a few more pages.
| Poster size | Letter | A4 |
|---|---|---|
| 16 × 20 in | 6 pages (3 × 2) | 6 pages (3 × 2) |
| 18 × 24 in | 8 pages (2 × 4) | 8 pages (2 × 4) |
| 24 × 36 in | 15 pages (3 × 5) | 15 pages (3 × 5) |
| 27 × 40 in | 16 pages (4 × 4) | 16 pages (4 × 4) |
| A2 (42 × 59.4 cm) | 8 pages (2 × 4) | 8 pages (2 × 4) |
| A1 (59.4 × 84.1 cm) | 15 pages (3 × 5) | 15 pages (3 × 5) |
| 50 × 70 cm | 8 pages (2 × 4) | 8 pages (2 × 4) |
| A0 (84.1 × 118.9 cm) | 25 pages (5 × 5) | 25 pages (5 × 5) |
How sharp will my poster be?
Sharpness is measured in pixels per inch (ppi). It is the number of picture pixels over one inch of paper.
| Pixels per inch | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Under 100 | Blurry up close |
| 100 to 199 | Fine from a distance |
| 200 or more | Sharp |
A phone photo of 4000 × 3000 pixels makes a sharp 20 × 15 inch poster. The same photo on a 36 inch wide poster is about 110 ppi. That is fine for a wall, but not for reading small text.
Frequently asked questions
How do I print a poster on multiple pages?
Open your picture here, choose the number of pages, and download the PDF. Print all pages at 100%, trim them, and glue them together.
How do I print a large image on several sheets of paper?
Set the final size or the number of sheets. The tool cuts the picture into one page per tile and keeps the pages in order. Row and column numbers help you put them back together.
Can I print a poster on A4 paper?
Yes. Choose A4 and the tool does the rest. For a poster of A2 size you need 8 pages. An A1 poster needs 15 pages.
What is overlap for?
Printers cannot print to the paper edge. Overlap repeats a strip of the picture on the next page. You lay one page over the other and the picture lines up with no gap.
Is this an alternative to the Rasterbator?
It does the same kind of job: it splits a picture into pages for a big poster. It runs in your browser and does not upload your picture.
Why does the poster look blurry?
The picture has too few pixels for that size. Check the pixels per inch line. Under 100 will look blurry. Use a bigger picture or choose a smaller poster.
Good to know
- HEIC pictures from an iPhone may not open. Convert them to JPG first
- Very big pictures work. The tool shrinks the preview, but each page is cut from the full picture
- Pages are made at up to 300 pixels per inch, so the PDF stays a sensible size
- Cut marks need a margin of 3 mm or more
- Always print at 100% or "actual size". Fit to page changes the size and breaks the overlap
- English pages use US Letter by default. Other languages use A4
