About inverting image colors

To invert an image is to turn every colour into its opposite: black becomes white, white becomes black, red becomes cyan, blue becomes yellow. The result looks like an old film negative.

This free tool inverts your images in a second — one image or many at once. It keeps transparency, so a PNG logo stays see-through. Drag the line across the picture to compare before and after. Everything happens in your browser; nothing is uploaded.

Features

  • Full negative — every colour turns into its opposite (each value becomes 255 minus the value)
  • Brightness only — light and dark swap, but the colours keep their hue
  • One channel — invert only the red, green or blue channel
  • Keeps transparency — see-through parts of a PNG stay see-through
  • Before and after split — drag the line across the image to compare
  • Many images at once — one click downloads them all as a ZIP
  • PNG, JPG or WebP — keep the original format or pick another one
  • Private — the images are changed on your device and never uploaded

Three ways to invert

  • All colours (negative) — the classic invert. Each red, green and blue value becomes 255 minus the value. Do it twice and you get the original back.
  • Brightness only — the smart choice for screenshots and diagrams. A white page with black text becomes a dark page with light text, but a red warning stays red and a blue link stays blue. A full negative would turn them cyan and orange. The hue and saturation stay the same; only the lightness flips.
  • One channel — invert just red, green or blue. Use it for colour effects, or to fix an image whose channel is stored the wrong way round (some normal maps and masks).

Common uses

  • Dark mode screenshots — turn a bright screenshot, chart or diagram dark for slides, docs or apps in dark mode
  • Negatives of photos — see a photo as a film negative, or for art and design ideas
  • Scanned film negatives — turn a photo of a negative into a positive (colour negatives also have an orange cast, so you may need to fix the colours after)
  • White logos from black ones — invert a black logo on a transparent background to get a white one
  • Saving ink — invert a dark picture with light lines before you print it

To turn a whole PDF dark, use Dark Mode PDF. To make a photo black and white, use Black and White Photo.

Frequently asked questions

How do I invert the colors of an image?

Choose the image, keep All colours (negative), and click Download inverted image. The file is ready at once.

How do I make a screenshot dark without changing its colours?

Pick Brightness only. White becomes black and black becomes white, but red stays red, green stays green and blue stays blue.

Does it keep transparency?

Yes. Only the colours are changed; the transparency of each pixel is kept. If you save as JPG, the clear parts become white, because JPG cannot be transparent.

Can I invert many images at once?

Yes. Choose or drop as many images as you like. The Download all (ZIP) button saves them all in one ZIP file. Only this image saves just the one on screen.

Does inverting lower the quality?

No. The image keeps its full size. PNG is saved without loss; JPG and WebP are saved at high quality (92 %).

Are my images uploaded?

No. The images are opened and changed by your browser, on your device. Nothing is sent to a server.
