About this tool

This free tool combines two videos into one screen. Stack a pair of landscape clips one above the other and you get a single vertical 9:16 video, 1080 × 1920 — exactly the shape Facebook Reels, YouTube Shorts and TikTok want. Or set the two side by side for a widescreen or square result. The layout is often called a split screen, though what it really does is put both clips on screen at the same time.

It is built for the format everyone actually posts: two ordinary landscape recordings — a screen capture and a talking head, a gameplay clip and a reaction, a before and an after — combined into a single file that fills a phone screen top to bottom.

Why two videos on one screen fits Reels, Shorts and TikTok

A phone screen is 9:16 — tall. An ordinary video is 16:9 — wide. Post a landscape clip to Reels and it becomes a small strip floating in the middle of the screen, with most of the display wasted. That is the whole problem this format solves.

Stack two landscape videos and the maths works out almost perfectly. Each 16:9 video, fitted to 1080 wide, is 608 pixels tall; two of them are 1216 of the 1920 available. Give each one half the canvas — 1080 × 960 — and they fill the screen completely with only a slight crop. Two wide videos turn into one tall one, and every pixel of the phone is used.

That is why two videos on one screen became the default shape for so much short-form video: gameplay above, a face below; a tutorial above, a webcam below; a claim above, the proof below. It is not a stylistic flourish, it is the most efficient way to fit landscape footage onto a vertical screen.

Crop to fill, or fit with a blurred background?

This choice decides what happens to the part of each video that does not fit its half.

Crop to fill enlarges the clip until it covers its half completely and trims the overflow. Nothing is letterboxed and the result looks deliberate. The trim starts from the centre, which is rarely where the subject actually is — so you can drag each video in the preview to move it inside its half, and scroll over it to zoom in. Push a face out of the dead centre, cut a webcam down to just the head and shoulders, or pull a scoreboard into view. Each clip is framed independently, and the preview shows exactly the crop the export will use.

You can also zoom out, all the way to the point where the clip's full width fits its half. Nothing is cut off at that setting — the whole frame is visible and black fills the space above and below it. That is the right answer for footage where the edges genuinely matter, and it is why the zoom slider goes below 100% for a wide clip in a tall half.

Between those two extremes, crop always discards something. If a video has burned-in subtitles along the bottom *and* a caption in a corner, framing can save one but not all four edges at once — that is when the blurred fit below is the better answer.

Fit with a blurred background shrinks the whole frame until all of it is visible, then fills the space around it with an enlarged, blurred copy of the same video. Nothing is cropped and it looks far more polished than plain bars — this is the treatment you see on most professionally made Reels.

Fit with black or white bars does the same but leaves flat colour instead. Honest and neutral; occasionally exactly what a brand style wants.

If you are unsure, try crop first and switch to blurred the moment you notice something important disappearing off the edge. The preview updates instantly, so it costs nothing to compare.

Choosing the sound

Two videos means two soundtracks, and you decide which of them survives — tick any combination of the three boxes.

Sound from video 1 or sound from video 2 on its own is right for most pairings. One clip has the commentary and the other is just room noise, so you keep the one that carries the meaning.

Tick both when each clip genuinely contributes: two people recorded separately in conversation, or an interview cut against location sound. Be aware that mixing does not duck one under the other, so two speaking voices will compete for attention.

Add external sound brings in an audio file of your own — a music bed, a voice-over, a track you cut elsewhere. It mixes with whatever else is ticked, so you can lay music under a narration by ticking video 1 *and* the external file. Tick it on its own and the footage plays to your track alone, which is what most music-led social clips want.

Untick everything for a silent clip, useful when the platform will add the sound afterwards.

Sound is mixed at even levels rather than one being pushed under the other, so if you are laying music beneath speech, turn the music down in the file itself before you bring it in. And whatever you tick, press play on the preview first — it plays exactly the sound the export will have.

How to use it

  • Add two videos — click each panel or drag a file onto it
  • Pick the layout: stacked for a vertical result, side by side for widescreen
  • Watch the preview and press play to check both clips are in step
  • Choose how each fills its half — crop, or fit with a blurred background
  • If you crop, frame each clip: drag it inside its half and scroll to zoom until the subject sits where you want
  • Tick the sound you want to keep — either clip, both, or your own audio file
  • Press "Make the video" and download the MP4 when it finishes

Good to know

  • Nothing is uploaded. Both clips are read, combined and encoded entirely on your device
  • The two clips start together. There is no offset control yet, so trim your clips first with Trim Video if one needs to start later
  • Encoding takes roughly as long as the finished clip. A 60-second Short takes about a minute; the progress bar shows how far along it is
  • Long clips need memory. Both videos are held at once, so on a phone stick to short pieces — cut them down first if needed
  • Framing is per clip and only applies to "crop to fill" — the fit modes already show the whole frame, so there is nothing to move. Your framing is remembered if you switch away and back
  • You cannot pan past the edge. The offsets are limited so the picture never leaves its half — whether it is larger than the half or smaller than it
  • Zooming out below 100% shows the whole width and fills the rest with black. The slider's lowest point is worked out per clip, since it depends on the clip's shape against the half it sits in
  • Portrait sources get cropped hard. This format is built for landscape footage; the tool warns you if either clip is already vertical
  • The output is H.264 MP4 at 30 fps, which every platform accepts without re-processing
  • If a clip has no audio track, the tool says so instead of quietly ignoring your choice
  • An external track longer than the video is trimmed to the video's length, so the file never runs past the last frame
  • The preview plays the same sound the export will have, so you can check the mix before spending time encoding
  • This tool puts both clips on screen together. To play one clip after the other instead, use Merge Video — same word "combine", completely different result
