About Blur Video

This free video blur tool hides the parts of a video you do not want to show: a face, a car number plate, a name on a screen, an address or a logo. Draw one or more boxes on the video, and everything inside them is blurred or pixelated. Or blur the whole video at once.

You see the blur live on the video before you save, so you know what you will get. Each box can have its own time, for example only from 0:12 to 0:20. The sound is kept as it is. It all runs in your browser — your video is never uploaded.

Features

  • Blur one or many parts — up to 10 boxes, drawn with the mouse or a finger
  • Rectangle or oval — an oval fits a face better
  • Blur or pixelate — a soft blur or a mosaic of big squares, strength 1 to 10
  • A time for each box — "only from 0:12 to 0:20", or leave it empty for the whole video
  • Blur the whole video — all of it, or only from one time to another
  • Live preview — play the video and see the blur before you save
  • Sound kept — the audio is copied, not changed
  • No upload, no account, no watermark

The boxes do not follow movement

Please know this before you start: the boxes stay where you draw them. This tool has no tracking, so a box does not move with a face or a car that moves across the picture.

What works well:

  • Things that do not move: a screen, a sign, a name tag, a number plate on a parked car, a face in a talking-head video
  • A thing that moves a little: draw a bigger box that covers all of its path
  • A thing that moves a lot: split the time into several boxes. Box 1 from 0:00 to 0:04 on the left, box 2 from 0:04 to 0:08 in the middle, and so on. Use the clock button next to each time to take the time from the video

Play the video in the preview and watch the boxes. What you see there is what you get.

Blur or pixelate?

  • Blur — soft and calm. Good for a background, a screen, or a face in a vlog
  • Pixelate — big squares, the classic "censored" look. Good for number plates and text

For private information, use a high strength. A weak blur on large text can sometimes still be read.

Common uses

  • Hide faces of people who did not agree to be filmed
  • Blur number plates in dashcam or street videos
  • Hide a screen, a password, an email or a chat in a screen recording
  • Remove a logo or a brand name from a clip
  • Blur the whole video for a soft background, or for a spoiler or a reveal

To blur a photo, use Blur or Pixelate Part of a Photo. To cut the video first, use Trim Video. To remove the sound, use Mute Video.

Frequently asked questions

How do I blur a face in a video?

Drop the video on the box. A box appears in the middle — drag it over the face, and drag a corner to make it the right size. Choose Oval for a face. Press Play to check it, then Blur the video.

Does the blur follow a moving face?

No. The boxes stay where you put them. For a face that moves, use a bigger box, or add several boxes, each with its own time. The preview shows exactly where the blur will be.

Can I blur only part of the time?

Yes. Each box has From and to times. Type them as minutes:seconds, like 1:05, or press the clock button to use the time shown on the video. Leave them empty to blur from start to end.

Can I blur more than one thing?

Yes. Draw more boxes on the video, or press Add a box. You can have up to 10, each with its own shape and time.

Is the sound changed?

No. The sound is copied as it is. Only if your file's sound cannot go into an MP4 is it converted to AAC.

How long does it take?

The whole video has to be encoded again, so it takes about as long as the video plays, or longer for big 1080p or 4K videos. A short phone clip is usually done in under a minute.

Is my video uploaded?

No. The video is processed in your browser and never leaves your device. The video engine (about 30 MB) is downloaded once, the first time you use it.

How to use it

  • Drop your video on the box, or click to choose one
  • Drag on the video to draw a box, or move and resize the first box
  • Pick Rectangle or Oval, and set a time if the box is only needed for a part
  • Choose Blur or Pixelate and the strength, and press Play to check the preview
  • Press Blur the video, then Download the blurred video
