One PDF — numbered in your browser, never uploaded

About this tool

This free tool adds page numbers to a PDF. Upload the file, pick where the numbers go and how they look, and download the numbered document — the pages themselves are untouched, the number is simply printed on top.

Everything runs in your browser. Your PDF is never uploaded, so contracts, reports and thesis chapters stay on your own computer.

Choose the format

Pick a ready-made style or write your own:

  • 1 — just the number
  • - 1 - — the number between dashes
  • Page 1
  • 1 of 10 or 1/10
  • Custom — any text you like, using {n} for the page number, {total} for the page count and {date} for today's date

Skip the cover page, or start at any number

Two separate settings give you full control:

  • First page to number — leave the cover, title page or table of contents blank by starting on page 2, 3 or later
  • Start numbering at — the first printed number. Set it to 12 to continue on from another document, or to 0 if the introduction is unnumbered

Preview before you download

The preview shows the first page that gets a number, with your exact font, size, color and margins. Click Expand to scroll through every page of the document and check the numbering from start to finish before you save anything.

  • Adjustable bottom/top margin and side margin
  • Live preview of one page, or a fullscreen preview of all pages

Common uses

  • Number a report, proposal or contract before printing or signing

  • Pick a format and position — choose the style, then click a cell in the position grid
  • Adjust the details — font, size, color, margins, starting number and the first page to number
  • Check the preview — expand it to look through every page
