About the Voice Changer

This free online voice changer takes a recording — either straight from your microphone or from a file you already have — and changes how the voice sounds. Make it higher, deeper, robotic or echoing, listen to it, and save the result as a WAV file.

Your voice is processed inside your browser. It is never uploaded, never stored on a server, and nothing survives closing the tab. Most voice changers on the web send your recording somewhere; this one has nowhere to send it.

The six effects

• Normal — no change. Useful for comparing.
• Chipmunk — seven semitones up. Higher and faster.
• Deep — six semitones down. Lower and slower.
• Robot — a ring modulator at 55 Hz, which adds the metallic buzz.
• Echo — a 0.22 second delay that feeds back into itself, like a small hall.
• Alien — a slight pitch rise with a faster ring modulator and echo together.

The Pitch slider works on top of whichever effect you pick, from 12 semitones down to 12 semitones up. Pick *Normal* and use the slider alone for a plain pitch change with no other colouring.

Why the speed changes with the pitch

This tool changes pitch by resampling — playing the recording faster or slower — which moves pitch and speed together, the way speeding up a tape does.

That is deliberate. It is the sound people actually mean by "chipmunk" and "deep voice", and it is what makes a voice sound genuinely different rather than just detuned.

The alternative, changing pitch while keeping the original length, needs much heavier processing and tends to add a watery, stuttering quality to speech. If you need the timing preserved exactly — for dubbing to picture, say — this is not the right tool.

Good to know

• The first time you press Record, your browser asks permission for the microphone. If you refuse, allow it again from the icon in the address bar.
• A very long recording uses a lot of memory, because the whole thing is held in the browser. A few minutes is fine; an hour may not be.
• The download is an uncompressed WAV, so the file is larger than an MP3 of the same length. Convert it with the Audio Converter on this site if you need something smaller.
• Recording someone without their knowledge is illegal in many places. Use this on your own voice, or with permission.
• Do not use a changed voice to impersonate a real person. Pretending to be someone else — especially to ask for money or information — is fraud in most countries.
