About the Silence Remover

This free silence remover finds the quiet stretches in a recording and takes them out. A twenty-minute interview with long pauses can come back as fourteen minutes that sound exactly the same, only tighter.

You can see what it is going to do before it does it. The waveform shows kept audio in teal and everything about to be cut in grey, and it updates as you move the sliders. There is no guessing and no undo needed.

Everything runs in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, and nothing is stored.

The three settings

Most tools give you one slider and hope. These three are the ones that actually matter, and they do different jobs:

• Counts as silence below — how quiet a moment has to be before it is a candidate. The default of -40 dB suits a normal spoken recording. A noisy room needs a higher setting (-30 dB) or nothing is ever quiet enough. A very clean studio recording can go lower (-50 dB).
• Only cut gaps longer than — stops it destroying the recording. The natural pause between two sentences is about 0.3 seconds, and cutting those makes speech sound frantic and inhuman. The default 0.6 s removes hesitation but keeps punctuation.
• Leave a breath of — how much silence to keep at each end of a cut. Without this, speech is clipped flush against the first syllable and sounds wrong even though the maths is right. 0.15 s is usually enough.

If the result sounds rushed, raise the minimum gap. If it sounds clipped, raise the breath.

How it decides

The recording is scanned in 20 millisecond windows. Each window gets one loudness reading, measured as RMS rather than peak — so a single click or lip smack inside a pause does not rescue the whole pause.

Any run of windows below your threshold, lasting longer than your minimum gap, becomes a cut. The breath is then subtracted from both ends. What is left is copied into a new file, in order, with no gaps between the pieces.

That is all it does. It does not fade, level, denoise or re-time anything — the audio it keeps is bit-for-bit the audio you gave it.

Good to know

• The result is saved as a WAV file, because that is what a browser can write without an encoder. It is larger than the MP3 you put in. Use the Audio Converter on this site to shrink it.
• This is audio only. To tighten a video, take the audio out with Video to Audio first, or edit the video in the Video Editor.
• A very long file (over about an hour) uses a lot of memory, because the whole recording is held in the browser.
• Check the result before you rely on it. Automatic cutting is fast, not perfect — a very quiet speaker can be mistaken for silence. That is what the listen button is for.
• Music does not usually benefit from this. It is built for speech.
