About the BPM finder
BPM (beats per minute) is the tempo of a song — how many beats you would tap in one minute. A slow ballad is about 70 BPM, most pop songs are 100–130, house music is about 125, and drum and bass is about 170.
Drop a song on this page and it finds the BPM for you. It listens for the drum hits and other sharp sounds, finds how often they repeat, and checks the whole song to get the number exact. You can drop many songs at once — each one gets its own line.
How to use it
- Press the box and choose one or more songs, or drop them on it
- Wait a second or two for each song
- Read the BPM — the big number
- Press Play with click to hear the song with a click on every beat
- If the click is twice as fast or twice as slow as the beat you feel, use the Half or Double number
Half time and double time
Tempo has a famous problem: one person taps along at 85 BPM, another at 170, and both are right. A drum and bass track, for example, often *feels* like 85. The finder picks the most likely one, and always shows Half and Double too. Use the one that matches how you count the music.
What people use it for
- DJs — sort a crate by tempo and plan smooth mixes
- Running and workouts — find songs that match your step rate (about 160–180 steps a minute when running)
- Dancers — check if a song suits a dance style, like 120 for salsa or 90 for hip hop
- Musicians — set the metronome to the tempo of a song you want to learn
- Video editors — cut on the beat
Frequently asked questions
How accurate is it?
For music with a steady beat — pop, rock, dance, hip hop — it is usually right to within one BPM. It reads up to the first five minutes of each song and checks the beat over all of it.
Why does it say "Not sure"?
Some music has no steady beat: classical, ambient, speech, or songs where the tempo changes. Then there is no single right BPM, and the number is only a guess. Check it with Play with click, or tap the tempo by hand.
The number is half or double. Which is right?
Both describe the same music — see *Half time and double time* above. Play it with the click and pick the one that feels right.
Are my songs uploaded?
No. Each song is opened and worked out in your browser. Nothing is sent anywhere, so you can use it with unreleased music too.
Which files work?
MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, OGG and FLAC — any audio your browser can play. Safari cannot open OGG files on some versions.
