Privacy Policy — Read My Book

Effective date: 2026-08-25

App: Read My Book (the "App")

Read My Book helps people read English text from real books: point the camera at a page, the App recognizes the text, reads it aloud, and can show a word's meaning in your chosen language. The App is made for parents, teachers, and learners — the person setting it up and using it is expected to be an adult who may use it together with a child. We keep data on the device wherever possible.

This policy explains what the App does and does not do with information.

Short summary

  • The App has no account or login and does not ask for your name, email, phone number, or precise location.
  • Photos of book pages are processed on your device to recognize text. They are not uploaded to us or anyone else, and the App does not save them.
  • The words or phrases you choose to look up are sent to our translation service and, for single words, to dictionaryapi.dev, so those services can return a meaning.
  • The App shows ads through Google AdMob. Ads may be personalized. In the EEA, UK, and Switzerland, the App shows a consent form (Google UMP) and your choice controls whether personalized ads are used.
  • Your saved scans and settings are stored only on your device.
  • We do not sell personal information, and we do not use analytics or tracking SDKs of our own.

Information the App processes

1. Camera and page images (on-device only)

The App uses the camera so you can scan a book page. Text recognition (OCR) runs entirely on the device using Google ML Kit. The captured image is used only to extract text and is not stored by the App and not sent to us or any server.

2. Text you choose to look up (sent to third parties)

When you tap Meaning, the selected English word or phrase is sent over the internet so a translation can be returned:

  • It is sent to our translation service, a proxy hosted on Amazon Web Services (AWS), which forwards it to Google Cloud Translation and returns the result in your chosen interface language. The request contains only the text you selected — no name, account, or personal identifier — and we do not use it to build any profile of you or for advertising.
  • For a single word, the word is also sent to dictionaryapi.dev to fetch its dictionary definitions and pronunciation (IPA).

No image and no identity are sent — only the text you selected.

3. Read-aloud (text-to-speech)

Reading aloud uses your device's built-in voices. This works offline and sends nothing over the network. For the most natural sound you can install a higher-quality English voice from your device settings (optional and free).

4. Saved scans and settings (stored locally)

Passages you save and your preferences (interface language, voice, reading mode, display options) are stored in the App's local storage on your device only. They are not uploaded and are removed when you delete them in the App or uninstall the App.

5. Advertising (Google AdMob)

The App displays ads served by Google AdMob. To serve ads and limit ad fraud, Google may process device and technical information such as advertising/device identifiers, IP address, and general (coarse) region, and — where permitted — may show personalized ads. We do not receive this ad data ourselves and do not combine it with anything else.

Your consent (EEA / UK / Switzerland). Where required by law, the App uses Google's User Messaging Platform (UMP) to show a consent form on first launch. Your choice there determines whether ads are personalized or non-personalized. You can change your choice later from your device's Google ad settings.

Information we do NOT collect

  • No account, username, or password.
  • No name, email address, phone number, or contacts.
  • No precise (GPS) location.
  • No microphone recording.
  • No analytics or cross-app tracking by us.
  • No storing or uploading of your book-page photos.

Audience and children

Read My Book is a general-audience app intended for parents, teachers, and learners. It is not directed primarily at children, and it is not enrolled in the Google Play "Designed for Families" program. The person who installs and operates the App (scanning pages, changing settings) is expected to be an adult.

Because ads may be personalized, if you allow a child to use the App we ask that a parent or guardian set it up and supervise its use. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children. If you believe someone has provided us personal information and it should be removed, contact us at the address below and we will address it promptly.

Third-party services

The App relies on these services, each governed by its own privacy policy:

  • Google AdMob — shows ads (may be personalized). Privacy policy: https://policies.google.com/privacy
  • Google User Messaging Platform (UMP) — shows the ad-consent form in the EEA, UK, and Switzerland. Privacy policy: https://policies.google.com/privacy
  • Google Cloud Translation (via our AWS proxy) — translates the text you select. Privacy policy: https://policies.google.com/privacy
  • Amazon Web Services (AWS) — hosts our translation proxy. Privacy policy: https://aws.amazon.com/privacy/
  • dictionaryapi.dev — returns definitions and pronunciation for single words. Privacy policy: https://dictionaryapi.dev

On-device text recognition uses Google ML Kit, which runs locally and does not transmit your images.

Permissions the App requests

  • Camera — required to scan and read text from book pages.
  • Internet / network access — used for word meanings, translation, and ads.

Data retention and deletion

  • Saved scans and settings remain on your device until you delete them in the App or uninstall the App.
  • We do not run a database that stores your content. Text sent for translation is processed only to return a result and is not retained by us to identify you or to build a profile.
  • To remove all App data, delete saved items in the App or uninstall the App.

Data security

Content stays on your device wherever possible, and requests to third-party services (translation, dictionary, ads) are made over secure HTTPS connections.

International users

If you use the App outside the country where the third-party services operate, the text you choose to look up may be processed on servers in other countries (for example, by Google or AWS). By using those features you consent to that processing.

Your choices and rights

  • You can avoid all network data sharing by not using the Meaning feature. Reading aloud already works offline with the device voice.
  • In the EEA/UK/Switzerland you can accept or decline personalized ads via the consent form, and change it later in your device's Google ad settings.
  • Depending on your region (e.g., GDPR in the EU/UK, CPRA in California), you may have rights regarding personal data. Since the App does not collect personal data itself, most requests should be directed to the relevant third party (e.g., Google) via the links above. You may also contact us at the address below.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the App evolves. We will change the "Effective date" above and, for significant changes, provide notice within the App or on the App's store listing. Continued use after an update means you accept the revised policy.
