Read My Book ("the app", "we", "us") lets you point your camera at a printed page, recognize the English text on it, hear the words read aloud, and look up their meaning. This Privacy Policy explains what information the app does and does not handle. By using Read My Book you agree to this policy.
Read My Book is published by AppAndTools (https://appandtools.com/).
Summary (the short version)
- No account is required. You don't sign up or log in. The app never asks for your name, email, phone number, or location.
- Photos of pages stay on your device. Text recognition runs entirely on your phone. Page images are not uploaded to us or anyone else, and the app does not save them.
- Only the text you choose to translate or hear is sent to Google Translate and, for single words, to dictionaryapi.dev — so those services can return a result.
- Saved scans and settings stay on your device.
- We show ads using Google AdMob, which may collect certain device information (such as advertising identifiers) to serve and measure ads.
- We don't sell personal information, and we use no analytics or tracking SDKs.
Information the app processes
Camera and page images (on-device only)
The app uses the camera so you can scan a printed page. Text recognition (OCR) runs entirely on the device, using Google ML Kit on Android and Apple Vision on iOS. The captured image is used only to extract text; it is not stored by the app and not sent to us or any server.
Text you choose to translate or look up (sent to third parties)
When you tap "Nghĩa" (Meaning), the selected English word or phrase is sent over the internet to Google Translate (translate.googleapis.com) to return a Vietnamese translation. For a single word, that word may also be sent to dictionaryapi.dev to fetch its pronunciation (IPA).
Only the text you selected is sent — no identity, no account, and no image.
Read-aloud (text-to-speech)
By default, reading aloud uses your device's built-in voices, which work offline and send nothing over the network. If you choose the optional "Google Dịch" online voice in Settings, the text to be spoken is sent to Google's text-to-speech endpoint (translate.google.com) to generate the audio.
Saved scans and settings (stored locally only)
Passages you save ("Đã lưu") and your preferences (voice, reading mode, display options) are stored in the app's local storage on your device only. This information:
- Is not transmitted to us or any server we control,
- Is not backed up to any cloud by the app,
- Is deleted when you delete the item in the app, when you clear the app's data, or when you uninstall the app.
We (the developer) cannot see or access this content.
Permissions the app requests
- Camera — required to scan and read text from printed pages.
- Internet / Network access — used for translation, pronunciation, the optional online voice, and ads.
The app does not use your location, contacts, or microphone.
Information we do NOT collect
- No account, username, or password.
- No name, email address, phone number, or contacts.
- No precise (GPS) location.
- No microphone recording.
- No analytics, advertising profiles, or cross-app tracking by us.
- No storing or uploading of your page photos.
Advertising (Google AdMob)
Read My Book displays ads through Google AdMob, a service provided by Google. To serve and measure ads and to limit ad fraud, Google and its partners may collect and process certain information, which can include:
- Device advertising identifiers (e.g., Android Advertising ID),
- Device information (device model, OS version, language, coarse/approximate region, IP address),
- App interaction and ad-performance data.
This data is collected and used by Google, not by us, in accordance with Google's own policies. For details on how Google uses this information, and your choices, see:
- Google Privacy Policy: https://policies.google.com/privacy
- How Google uses information from sites/apps that use its services: https://policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites
Your ad choices
You can limit ad personalization at the device level:
- Android: Settings → Google → Ads → *Delete/Reset advertising ID* or *Opt out of Ads Personalization*.
How information is used
- Page images: solely to extract text on your device, then discarded.
- Selected text: solely to return a translation or pronunciation for the words you asked about.
- Saved scans and settings: solely to provide the app's functionality on your device.
- Advertising data (via Google): to display ads, measure their performance, and limit repetitive ads, as described by Google.
We do not sell your personal information.
Data sharing
We do not share your saved scans or page images with anyone — they never leave your device. The only third parties involved are:
- Google AdMob — shows ads. Privacy policy: https://policies.google.com/privacy
- Google Translate — translates the text you select, and powers the optional online voice. Privacy policy: https://policies.google.com/privacy
- dictionaryapi.dev — returns the pronunciation (IPA) of single words. Privacy policy: https://dictionaryapi.dev
On-device text recognition uses Google ML Kit (Android) and Apple Vision (iOS); these run locally and do not transmit your images.
Data retention and deletion
- Saved scans and settings remain on your device until you delete them in the app or uninstall the app.
- We do not operate a server that stores your content, so there is nothing for us to retain or delete on your behalf.
- To delete all app data at any time: uninstall the app, or go to your device Settings → Apps → Read My Book → Storage → Clear data.
- Advertising data handled by Google is retained and managed according to Google's policies.
Children's privacy
Read My Book is not directed to children under the age required by your local law (for example, under 13 in the U.S.). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided personal information, please contact us and we will help address it.
International users
If you use the app outside the country where the third-party services operate, the text you choose to translate or hear may be processed on servers in other countries (for example, by Google). By using those features you consent to that processing.
Your choices and rights
- You can avoid all network data sharing by not using the "Nghĩa" (Meaning) feature and by keeping the on-device voice selected.
- Depending on your region (e.g., GDPR in the EU, CCPA in California), you may have rights regarding personal data. Since the app does not collect personal data itself, most requests should be directed to the relevant third party (e.g., Google) via the links above. You may also contact us at the address below.
Security
Your saved content is stored in the app's private storage on your device and protected by your device's own security (screen lock, OS sandboxing). Requests to third-party services are made over secure HTTPS connections. No method of electronic storage is 100% secure, but because your content stays on your device, it is never transmitted to us.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by updating the "Last updated" date above and, where appropriate, within the app or on our website.
